Just started a collection for my daughter, this is the first one, if anybody else collects these post that note!
You'll be even more shocked to know there's a pretty serious market for these, because it combines currency collectors with Disney collectors. I'm not too interested in these however.
They have been around since the late 1980s. Disney stopped printing and circulating them in the parks until very recently. When I was at Disneyworld a couple of years ago I had to park at the visitors center at the front of the park for about an hour to find someone that had access to the safe where they kept them. There was a $50 issued a few years ago that is pretty pricey. The other denominations are $1, $5 and $10.
Before I knew any better, I got a whole pile of the stuff in a lot of other Disney collectibles (like those .999 silver rounds in the nice velour cases.) I threw the whole pile in the '$1 each' world currency box. I remember being surprised when they were gone within 48 hours.
I was thinking of doing something like that with my daughter. I think she'd like the princess ones better though.
Ugh, those things drive me crazy. Though I can see them getting younger ones interested in the hobby.
There really cool!! trying to build a set so have to collect the scary ones along with the mello ones
Wonder if they are on AliBaba yet Where do they fit in the counterfeit legality? Like currency or like 20% off coupons you aren't suppose to make copies?
