I don't see an A, I see a top to a leaf in the wreath.

Like Med-man, I think the "A" is an illusion caused from the top of the leaf's in the wreath.

Here is how I see it:

Maybe the "A" was intentionally hidden in the leaf design. It wouldn't be the first time for this. OTOH, it wouldn't be the first time a book was wrong either. :)

What the BMC catalog tells us is that Warwick Wroth saw an "A" also. That does not necessarily make it an A. Are there coins with other letters? Since it's a Syrian provincial, I would assume those letters would be Greek, so do coins exist with B, or Γ or Δ ?

Without more evidence, I'm also inclined to call it a part of the wreath. In general, when the Romans added field marks, they tried to be horizontal about it.

    Yes.

If you align the coin with the wreath rather than the "SC", the "A" is horizontal... An altered die cutter ? :wacky:

Are they numerals on this particular type, indicating years of rule?

In the BMC catalog, it is said that "the numerals probably indicate mint-issues".

Come to think again, I did not see any of these without a control mark below the SC, so... :bookworm:
