Actually, maybe not. Is that a big ding in liberty's neck?

i think you're referring to the design. (compare original production design.."perfect 70") .it is easy to forget the little details the artist puts in. grading let's you really pay attention to the coin's design. the large cent, bust halves and vam guys (as well as other specialists) really dig into design details..down to various dies used during production...very cool (from a coin nerd's point of view!)! coins develop their own personality as they interact with their environment over the years. the longer it has been around, the more character it develops. only my own opinion....what stories each could tell! boy i digress..anyway, mark on neck vs design detail to help grade...thank you all for your responses..

srkjkd, are you saying that the mark I have circled here is part of the design??

do you have a redbook pic?..if you check out other morgan dollars, is that design there or is this unique?

books are actually quite handy..knowledge isn't power...the ability to apply knowledge is power...its great to learn or notice something new every day. even past knowledge remembered is exhilarating! once you compare this morgan with a few others..you will have your answer...plus you will have seen a few more coins..graded them in your mind and in comparison with others and learned just a little more...good for you!!!

    Yes, it is.

Even though it is an O mint coin, I don't think it quite makes 65 - I'd say 64.

I would call it a 4/5 liner, leaning towards 64 as it has been lightly thumbed IMO.

After looking at my Morgans, I stand corrected. I can't BEleive I never noticed that before!!

I agree with Zane that it may have been thumbed as there appears to be some darkness on the face. It seems like a liner 64/65 to me. I would call it a PQ 64, but ANACS may have put it in a 65 holder.

    Steve,
I'm surprised this coin was graded a 63. Can I ask that if you rotate the coin under direct light, are there any faint wipes or hairlines anywhere?
