Today's new pickup is a State of Georgia confederate era note - I started collecting these and am aiming to get a complete a set as possible. They change from year to year, and the designs are usually interesting. This is the 1862 $5, with the red protecting overprint. For a long time I couldn't tell if the guy was holding an axe... or a book...

 

Today's new pickup is another one from the obsolete mill, this somewhat earlier note dated 1841 from Bucks County PA has alot of design elements and certainly got around. Hammer cancelled so you know it was full legit... you see a bill with this much circulation and you wonder what was it used to buy? A wagon wheel? A case of absinthe? A stagecoach ride? A round of whiskey and whores? Yeah, that's the ticket...

 

Probably some Sarsaparilla to treat their gonorrhea.

 

I think that would have made a better song than Macarena.

"Heeyyyyyyyyyyyyy... Gonorrhea! Ay!!!"

Today's new pickup is another in a long string of obsoletes, so if you like obsoletes, you are going to be happy, if not, well, tune out for the duration of the month, because this is about to be the Obsolete Channel...

This $5 from New Ipswich has elements I like - an eagle, large numeral design, colored overprint... well worn to be sure. Just think of all the sarsaparilla you could by with it...

 

Why would this obsolete have signed signatures but not be given a serial number?

 

I'm liking this channel! I'll have to set up my TiVo.

Thanks. It was one of my biggest acquisitions lately. I may eventually sell one of the two or trade it for an 1869 rainbow or an 1875 national. Those 2 notes will complete my large size $1 type set.

They are not too uncommon, I collected these out of circulation in about 3 months.

 

Yes, the New Ipswich is a contemporary counterfeit, real ones are SENC but even this counterfeit is not very common, only three listed in the HA archives.

Tonights new pickup is another obsolete, this time from Maryland. Alot of engraving and it has those 3-D looking little intaglios on it... the ladies aren't shy, that one on the left has the dress strap down with that "come hither sailor" look...

 

Swedes. Both notes are only about 4.75" long.

My maternal grandfather's family was from "the old country": mostly Sweden with a few Danes in the mix. I also picked up some Swedish coins lately and will be posting them in the appropriate forum.
