Hey All, I got to visit with Mom recently and she overheard me speaking about coins. She texted me the other night and said these were in her Aunt's jewelry box. Thanks to you guys I know what two of them are: A 1923 Peace Dollar, a Morgan (poss 1921 she couldn't read the date), the third I already knew a 1964 Kennedy (At least she thinks it is 1964) and a Unk French coin (which I hope you guys can help with). Before you say the pictures are out of focus, I know, it's Mom; she tried I also asked if she could send the obverse and reverse (for her, front and back). I got the same photos back LOL. She also has a neat looking pocket watch maybe if anyone here knows about that you can help out. I will be out her way in a couple of weeks so I can take better pictures later. Thanks all!!!!
Oh she sent the obverse of the Morgan and asked how she could clean them, yikes! I let her know not to and told her how they should be held ;-)
Elgin is a very famous watch maker. I have my great-grandfather's Elgin pocket watch. It's on a gold chain, and the fob is an elk tooth from an animal he killed in Alaska. Just a little bit of family history tied up there. I'll leave others to comment on the coins, as I'm still learning. But I would suggest that while you still can (and obviously I don't have any idea of how old your mom is) talk to your relatives and get the stories of any items like the watch. The watch itself probably has a set value. The stories behind the watch are what makes it a family heirloom instead of just a timepiece.
The French coin is a design known as the sower. It came in 1 franc and 2 francs denominations and was issued 1898-1920 in .835 silver. A similar design was used for the 1 franc in later years 1959-2001 but in nickel, the 5 francs in silver 1959-69, and in nickel 1970-2001. So the date and denomination on the reverse will tell her what she has.
Ty Green18 and GDJMSP!!!! I saw that the site grn18 provided has some key dates! Hope I can get her to send a better pic and then I will post it. Other than that we may have to wait to weeks.
The Elgin is a small size, possibly 0 unless your mother has super sausage fingers, 7 jewel, pretty basic lever movement example from around 1900. The gold looking case is a 20 year gold filled case. Value fairly small, maybe $40 or $50 if working, as lady's watches do not fetch nearly as much as men's watches.
Take mom out to buy comfortable shoes that are better for her than those flip flops. Then take her to lunch.
Hadn't had real "pennies" in years, more like bodles, bawbees, hardheads, placks, nonsunts, hatpieces etc. Bawbee was a term for the halfpenny in Northern Britain up until decimalisation.
Hey all We are Irish so first I will take her to get a drink and then Lunch and then maybe another drink She sent the pictures of the French coin it is a 1960, 5 Franks so it's silver yay. Afantiques thanks on the watch info here is the serial number if it helps 14954949. The coins reverse is blurred. On the obverse I noticed something unusual on the E in Francaise.
I will hopefully see in a few weeks and get better pics, hope to find errors I think, from when I enlarge it, it looks like a zero but we will know eventually. The good thing is from the information provided from above any in the sixties has silver content, so that's a plus
