Neat 1971 half, can anyone tell me what this is?

Found this while CRHing and I know it's definitely some PMD but it looks REALLY cool and I was wondering if anyone knows how this could be made? The signature is raised and appears to be a metal of some sort.

This could be some kind of "souvenir" coin like offered on Home Shopping Network at a big price. I'm sure there's machinery that could replicate a signature on a dozen coins a minute. Just a theory.

I'm guessing that's what it is too.

I may do this to all of my coins so I can ID them if they ever get stolen.

These cheap engravers simply move the metal they do not remove the metal.

And to take a stab at the souvenir suggestion, why on earth would HSN or Coin Vault or any number of other retail outlets offer a "souvenir" of someone's name?

I'm of the opinion that the coin has been engraved, with a name, more than likely as a gift for whatever reason.

See if it will scrape off...maybe it is some substance added on to the half dollar.

19Lyds, I didn't look too closely at the signature (especially since one view was upside-down) -- I thought it was "John Kennedy," which would make sense for a mass-produced souvenir coin. You are right if it just an anonymous name.

But will it make a decent '55 double-die Lincoln?
