    Hi all,
I got this the other day and I'm not sure how to grade it since its struck over another coin and they are notorious for poor strikes etc.

Its a 1690 Ireland Gunmoney halfcrown (small size)

I know its pretty high for a gun money piece but I am not sure if special grading rules apply to this like other series' out there that were "crudely" struck.

Thanks mate, just took some pics on my phone using the only grey background I have which is a towel lol. Apparently grey shows coins off better and the pics have come out better than the scanner ! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1410729785.203741.jpg

I don't think it would grade higher than a VF, maybe an XF. I'm not sure what you mean about it being struck over another coin. Try comparing it to pics of other coins, especially better detailed ones. That way you'll have a better idea of how much is worn off of your coin.

This is a small issue where they re-valued the coins the host is actually a 1689 Gunmoney shilling.

It's a fabulous coin. It has the sort of eye-appeal that makes a grade rather immaterial, but that's just my opinion - I'm far less interested in grades than most collectors.

It's much nicer than my only example of the type (June rather than May). I generally only collect ancients. This one came from an unsorted mixed word coin tin I bought last year.
