In several years, notably 1916, there were two versions of a particular coin which means the coin was introduced midyear. The Indian head penny and wheat penny were both minted in 1909, the V nickel and buffalo nickel were both minted in 1913 (very few V nickels were minted, but they were minted that year so they count for the purposes of this thread), the Barber dime and Mercury dime were both minted in 1916, the Barber quarter and standing Liberty quarter were both minted in 1916, the Morgan dollar and peace dollar were both minted in 1921, and the buffalo nickel and Jefferson nickel were both minted in 1938. My question is does anybody have the exact dates that the mint changed designs? I'm most interested in the 1916 designs. Did the Mercury dime and the standing Liberty quarter come out at the same time? If not which one was minted first?

I think the answers your wanting can be found in Breen's Encylopedia.

If not I know they are in Roger Burdette's Renaissance of American Coinage 1916 - 1921.

The 1913 V nickels were struck in 1912. The Mint received information in early December 1912. (The 1913 V Nickel dies had already been made at that time) the 1913 V nickel dies were destroyed at the end of 1912 and the rest of the 1912 dies and hubs Feb 24th, 1913.

Did some checking in Renaissance and the Mercury dime was Oct 30th 1916, the 1916 quarter was struck on Dec 16th, the 1917 production began on Dec 22nd, 1916. These quarters were not released immediately but were held until sometime between Jan 10th and 13th, 1917. Apparently the half dollar was December 22nd 1916. The 1921 Peace dollar was struck from Dec 28th through Dec 31st and released Dec 31st, 1921. Buffalo nickel production began Feb 18th, 1913 and distribution began Feb 22nd, 1913.
