I would have to say no. The 1880-S is known to be the best struck morgan dollar in its series and most coins that you would think could get PL or even DMPL end up in a regular holder because most coins from that date have good strike quality.

Obviously, we are just looking at one set of images, but the coin does not look PL to me at all. Regardless, the TPGs will put a Morgan into a PL or DMPL holder if they deserve it even if someone sends it in without the designation.

It's my understanding without the 15.00 add on that's a no go....
Do you know this for a fact? Not saying they do or don't...just my understanding and from what I have read...if your right I guess that solves it. (these pictures were under poor conditions/lighting also so probably not the BEST set to ask on)

Unless NGC has changed their guidelines within the last 3-4 years, it has never been required to pay an additional fee for PL/DMPL as Tom said.

image.jpg image.jpg I looked at a pic of mind and Here's one that has the pl designation. Has more cameo effect then yours a 65 pl. so I'd say prooflike characteristic on yours but not enough for a pl designation those 79-81 Morgans they rang the bell on the strikes to bad no didn't do the same

Nice coin. I can see now that it was a shade under the bar.

I thought to get the PL or DMPL all a coin had to do was refect well enough to read something at 2" to 4" for PL , as long as nothing impedes the clarity of the reflection .
