A difficult piece to grade. There appears to be some wear, so I'd have to go with AU-53. Take Care Ben
I would have to agree with AU-50. The ding on the nose is pretty noticeable. Great looking coin though!!!
I'll say AU53 and yes, the reverse looks a little nicer than the front... just the same as it almost always seems to me on these coins.
AU-50, with altered surfaces. Anacs may have left it in a 50-ish holder, although IMO it belongs in a net holder.
In now looking through the rest of the guesses (which I never do so as to not be swayed one way or the other).... Wow, looks like lots of you were thinking the same way I was, at least the last few responses. Making me wonder if we're not wrong. :desk:
I agree with many that the surfaces have been altered in some way. I'm just wondering wheter or not ANACS noted it or gave a net grade. My initial thought was probably that they ignored it here.
it is an old anacs au-53. picked it up last year to add generic gold to speculate on. bought this for 161.50 w/ gold around 620. i rather have these type coins than modern bullion, but that is only my preference.....steve hey ..btw, can you please tell me why you feel the coin is altered? anacs does not note this and to be honest, i couldn't tell. i have not handled a lot of gold coins so i stuck to slabs. however i worked in retail jewelry including goldsmithing all thru my 20's. have taken many courses thru gia as well as working with guys that have spent their life in the industry. so i am familiar with gold in and of itself and relationship to working with it and its appearance. now, i do not have the same familiarity with gold coins. i never had the money to collect them. . so..i am insistent on learning...tell me the reasons for the altered surfaces on the coin... i simply couldn't tell but you have much more knowledge on this. i greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge!! thank you....steve
