Hello, your opinions please? At first glance I thought wear or damage, then I put on glasses and took our magnifier. Upon closer inspection I can see that the L struck the rim of the coin, the I never left an impression, or very little, the B looks like it has always been a blob, and the date looks either smudged or doubled?. The back is interesting too, from my perspective, limited, it looks like it wore unevenly? Or is that a light strike? The O, the wheat stalk, and the E Pluribus are all worn on the back side of the "Liberty" issue. I have about 60 more photos if interested, and some of these are cropped. I found it fascinating once I took some shots and zoomed in. Hope you do too! Hope it is, as I suspect, a mint error. Dave
Looks like a 58 year old circulated wheatie to me. Maybe a bit of a grease filled die across liberty.
Ok. I though that the L being stamped on the edge of the coin instead of on the flat spot might have had more to do with its appearance. I haven't seen as many coins as some of you folks, I just started a few months ago. I don't know why the back looks like it does, and that's why I came to you guys. Part of the O in one is gone, along with the bottom of the P, and the wheat stalk, all on the flip side of where the L struck the edge. I just grabbed fistful of wheats to inspect the wearing on the back. The one thing they all have in common? Very evenly worn out back sides. .
Oh, and I'm sorry if I seem recalcitrant, I'm not, I'm just a curious type, and I try to make sense out of things if they look related.
Again with the reverse I would suspect that it was grease filled. It doesn't look like a foreign object was there. That's just my opinion.
It's all good. Again, wait on some other smarter-than-me people to chime in and see what they have to say. I could be right...or I could be wrong
No, it's fine. TY. Answers always appreciated. I hope to learn. It's not knowing enough about the minting process, and a rabid desire to find rarities. I was looking at the edge and it seems to be 'damaged' just a bit? Maybe it's post mint? I understand the L strike isn't exactly rare, but I'll settle for grease filled die. I'm keeping it anyway, because I like it. I appreciate your time.
