71S - 73s DCAM ECC Contrast $109 hmm http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/prices/ikedlr/pricespfull.shtml Nice Cameos for sure but...
Thumbing through the channels and saw it. The guy knows his Cameo coins. That being said, I am broke but I would like to have a complete IKE set EEC DCAM PCGS PR69 for $745. I will I had the monies. It will probably be worth more than my 2014 Gold Kennedy.
Funny to see Rick and Jack compete against their former boss Barry @ Art & Coin TV! Both shows were selling 1908 No Motto St. Gaudens PCGS MS66 this week. One was selling for $3295 the other $3195. I had to laugh because I just picked up this very coin, same TPG for ~ $1K less. While Rick knows his proof coins, he certainly charges you for his knowledge. He has great coins in his eBay store, but they're ~30-70% above retail. I tried to negotiate with him on a coin in his store, but he still wanted way more than I was willing to pay.
I can not argue that, I have his books and to be honest he helped me get started on my cameo journey. Still a neat show to watch.
Rick Tomaska needs to find the right "customer" to justify his story and his EEC IKE's which, IMO, are outrageously over priced. But then, that's just my opinion as I would never even consider purchasing one of his coins without first doing my own search. No doubt, there are many PR69DCAM IKE's out there that have varying degree's of contrast and the reality is that with just a little work, folks can find their own. It does not take a numismatic degree.
Wonder what his books say about buying at or close to FMV, because his shows markup about 30% on average.
don't forget that if you sell to him, you will get far far less. A member on the pcgs forums a long time ago did it and was not happy
If you BUY from him and even sell via Ebay, HA, or your LCS....you're still gonna get burned. In RT's case, he has thousands of the coins in question (probably) so how strong could he bid if you wanted to sell it back to him ?
IKE's are one of the areas that are very quiet. You can with reasonable patience and persistence find great coins very reasonable. Yes even PF69 Cameos in PCGS Plastic RT is high retail plus plus. You will be buried in any purchase you may make. I am an IKE fan and have a decent collection mostly PCGS plastic. Random Ike image MMS-2 added for no particular reason
Looks like the shows are from YEARS ago; the one I saw this weekend had pricing and was filmed back in 2015.
Saw another one this past Saturday.....1908 No Motto's being sold for $3,000 in MS64 condition. WAY above FMV. The educational aspect of the shows is great....I think people who stumble onto it will be intertested in coins/gold/Saints....but I wonder if they will feel they got "burned" by paying 25% over FMV. And I know he has to make a profit and I know it costs $$$ to put the infomercial on TV. Same price even if you stumble on the website directly: https://www.rarecollectiblestv.com/1908-no-motto-saint-gaudens-double-eagle-ms64.html
I've known Rick since I was in high school. He's a nice guy in person, and he has a family that he cares for deeply. In his defense, those TV productions are not cheap. And he educates the viewers in a clear and accessible way, which is valuable to people not experienced in numismatics. The coin hucksters on the other channels don't even attempt to do that.
No, my only argument -- question, really -- is how he can charge that amount over FMV ? Because I would think if he does repeat business with the 1st-timer TV customers at some point they will realize they paid way over market on the original or subsequent purchases... and that could lead to hard feelings. Because all the talk of "buying the coins in volume" makes it appear that they're getting a bargain -- and they are clearly NOT. Hey, I get that he is entitled to make a profit...by all means...and it costs money to put that on the air, the TV channels aren't donating the 30-minute TV blocks. Agree with your general thrust, LRC: if the infomercial gets someone into the world of coin collecting and/or bullion investing they can learn alot in the right manner. That's worth something. I just hope there aren't hard feelings from the initial purchase(s).
Must Be Selling Lots Of Coins.....my local cable channels have his infomercials airing at least 6-8 times in the next 6 days. Had a piece today on the 1899 Liberty DE. Selling it in MS63 for $3300. Much fatter premium to FMV than other coins he sells, notably the Saints and even some Indian Heads. Didn't catch the date of the show so it could have been with dates prices from a time when the coin sold for more. Again, information and content is A1. Just hope nobody gets agita from the price if they buy only that coin and/or only coins from his website if they are similarly priced. If they spur someone on to coin collecting, well, that's a different story.
What would be great would be if Rick updated an older gold/DE book or wrote a new one that went along with the purchases. That would really close the value gap in my eyes.
