This one has been at the local shop for several months. I've been tempted every time to get it, but hadn't since I already have a Claudius II. Couldn't resist on my last visit. Has some silvering on it. Claudius II Rome mint?, IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right; reverse VIRTVS AVG, Virtus standing left, branch in right, vertical spear in left, shield at feet RIC 109?
Definitely two nice Claudius II coins. Nice score at your local shop. Claudius II Gothicus AE Antoninianus, 268-270 AD, Antioch, 3.8g, 20mm OBV: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, Radiate head left. REV: AEQVITAS AVG, Aequitas standing left holding scales and cornucopia. REF: RIC V-1 197
A very nice upgrade in my humble opinion randy. Here is my CII/Virtus from Antioch. I still think it looks like he's wearing earmuffs or headphones. Perhaps listening to the finger snapping, toe tapping tunes of the tibia (a woodwind instrument) CLAUDIUS II (GOTHICUS) Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right REVERSE: VIRTVS AVG, Minerva standing right resting on shield and holding spear, S in exergue. Struck at Antioch, 268 AD 3.1g, 20mm RIC V-1, 225
Nice Claudius Gothicus Randy! That's some exceptional detail on the portrait. Here's my only example. Claudius II, Gothicus;268-270AD Bronze; AE Antoninianus OBV: IMP CLAVDIVS AVG; radiate draped bust Right REV: LAETITIA AVG; Laetitia standing left, holding wreath and anchor (RIC V-1 235)
Really? I'll never understand the 'one coin per ruler' mindset especially when it does not allow even a lifetime and a Consecration coin as in this case. I'd keep both unless I wanted to upgrade to coins with more clear legends. Yours are as nice as mine but there are better out there from both groups.
Nice coin Randy, some bold features, and the bust is excellent. Here's my one example, which came in a lot of other coins. The green spots are not BD, but some hard mineral deposits, and it's still got a touch of silvering... Claudius II Gothicus AE Antoninianus, 20mm, 3.47g, 12h; Rome mint: 269-70 Obv.: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG; radiate and cuirassed bust right. Rev.: GENIO EXERCI; Genius standing left, holding patera and cornucopiae. Reference: RIC 5a 48 (p. 215)
I have multiples on several emperors and even death. But some emperors, like claudius ii, I wouldnt bother with a death issue, no matter how cheap. If I got one in a trade, I would use it towards another trade.
TY, and great coins all. I'll be keeping both, actually I have others; They are just not worth photographing
What a nice thread. CIIG coins are often underapprecaited probably due to the poor production quality during this period. I bought a couple of ants. quite recently too. They are types not illustrated thus far... Claudius II Gothicus Antoninianus Obv:– IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind Rev:– IVVENTVS AVG, Hercules standing facing, head turned right, holding club set on ground in right hand, apple in left Minted in Antioch (//D). Sweet new addition, randygeki (congrats!!) ... oh, and the rest of you coin-fellas also have some amazing specimens (yup, there are certainly a few Uber-awesome coins in that grouping) ... ... eh-heh-heh ... but sadly, on the "other" side of the coin, I have a less than worthy example to toss into the mix (ummm but hey => please don't judge it too harshly, for my loving lil' coin does not know that it looks so nasty ... thanks gang)
Martin is right, a lot of Claudius II's coins are poorly struck. But one can occasionnally find nice gems, and not too pricey so far : Claudius Gothicus, Antoninianus Mediolanum mint, 1st officina, AD 268-270 IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. PROVID AVG, Providentia standing left, holding globe and cornucopiae. P at exergue 5.30 gr 18-21 mm Ref : RIC V, Part 1, 163, RCV # 11361 Claudius II "Gothicus", Antoninianus - Cyzicus mint, AD 269. LA in right field 10.14 gr 21/22 mm Ref : Emmet # 3878, RCV # 11407 Q
I trust all here have learned the lesson of this post. If you see a coin of Claudius II that is full legend, well struck on both sides with decent surfaces and has a reasonably well executed portrait, you should buy it. I'm not terribly impressed by the Antioch style but most full legend coins I see are from there. Milan (I like the portrait style) with die clash and Diana Antioch with Diana and Apollo - I like everything but the portrait style on this one.
Here are a couple of nice ones from my collection: CLAUDIUS II (GOTHICUS) Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped bust right REVERSE: SPES PVBLICA, Spes walking left, holding flower and raising robe, P in ex. Struck at Mediolanum, 268-69 AD 2.8g, 19.9mm RIC 168 CLAUDIUS II (GOTHICUS) Antoninianus OBVERSE: DIVO CLAVDIO, radiate head right REVERSE: CONSECRATIO, eagle standing facing with head right or left. Struck at Rome, 270 AD 3.4g, 22mm RIC 266
A couple of my favorite Alexandrian tetradrachms are of Claudius II. Emmett 3878(1) R1 Emmett 3896(3) R4 Here's a posthumous issue from a mixed lot. It might benefit from careful cleaning. And another from a mixed lot:
I started a Mars collection some time back which led me to buy this Claudius II Gothicus Ant Obv:– IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– VIRTVS AVG, Mars advancing right, holding trophy and spear Minted in Milan. (P in exe) Reference:– RIC 172. Cohen 315
