My Gold Kennedy is about to be shipped to me, so I wanted to get some coins ready to send off to grade. They said I cannot mix the gold kennedy with old $2.5 coins in the same submission... is this true? They did say I could send in the same box though. I am sending in 20 $2.5 coins... and had a few questions about that as well. One coin almost looks off-center struck. The edge is a little larger on one side than the other. How do I need to designate that to get them to grade it as such. Error? Broadstruck? I have sent in groups of 5 in the past to get graded, but I have way too many coins I am holding on to thinking they might grade decent, so I need to get these sent so I can possibly sell some and free up some cash!
I suggest that you call NGC Customer Service, 800-624-2646, and ask them since you have more than one question to resolve. Chris
Yes, gold has to be on a separate form. And the Kennedys need to be on a different form from the $2.5s. Modern has to be separate from older coins. If you want one checked to see if it is an error, you need to check error on the submission sheet and MAKE A NOTE either in the comments section under your listings or on a separate piece of paper asking them to check that coin for an error designation. If they feel it's an error, it will be listed on the label and what the error is. It will cost you a little more for them to do the error also. All your stuff can go in the same box but you might put each invoice coins in a ziplock and write the invoice number on it with a sharpie so they know which paperwork it goes with to make it easier for them to match them up. Also note: When you fill out all the invoices, if you do it online using the PDF form, it will automatically add shipping to each invoice. Even if you do it by hand, unless you SPECIFY on a separate piece of paper and/or on each invoice that you want them shipped back all at the same time, they will ship each invoice as it is finished and you will incur a lot of return shipping fees. I always put special instructions on a separate piece of paper so they don't miss anything. As the coins go into the final stage of grading, they will hold them all until they are all done and ship one nice package back to you. And, of course, you can't see the grades until they are shipped so it gets frustrating knowing some are done and ready but you can't see what you got. Hope you come out good on all your submissions!!!
Thank you so much for your tips, keemao! I just finished the pdf submission for all 20 $2.5 coins. Total of 6 varieties/errors. They probably will not designate all of those, but if I get a few, I figure that will pay for the upgrade charges to look for them. Four rotated dies (very slight), one broad struck, and one double date. I am submitting 7 1911 $2 1/2 Indians that I think have a shot at 1911-D weak D. I have submitted a lot of 1911 in the past, and have 3 weak D so far. Most turn out to be 1911, but those 3 D coins have more than paid for the grading! The rest of the coins I think just have a decent shot at grading MS. I am hoping for a few 62 or better. Most will probably be low MS, high AU, or cleaned (hopefully not though!). I will get the gold kennedy ready to include in the shipment when it arrives, and if I think it has a shot at a 70. Thanks again!
No problem. When I get my gold Kennedys, which are scheduled to ship on 9-3, I think they will come too late for ER designation so I am just going to admire them and put them in the safe deposit box. I don't have any gold Indians but one of these days!!
Looks like my 20 $2 1/2 coins have been graded! Now I am waiting on the grades to post. Looks like none of the 7 1911 $2 1/2 are getting the weak D variety. I did get an 1851/1851 double date out of the bunch, though! It is not showing any other errors yet. I was hoping for a few rotated dies, etc. Would those show up yet, or only show once the grades are posted?
No grades show up until the entire order is shipped. If you paid for errors or asked them to check for rotated dies they might show up on the inventory listing or may not. I know date errors will show on the inventory after they check the coins if you noted for them to check the coin.
Well the grades have posted. I had 20 $2 1/2 gold coins graded. No errors other than the 1851/1851 double date $2 1/2, and it graded AU cleaned (did not look cleaned to me). I was hoping for some rotated die errors, but I guess they thought there were none. None of the 1911 coins graded weak D... so no huge home run there. HOWEVER, one of my 1914 $2 1/2 (second rarest date) graded MS63, making it worth about $4,700 (going for around $3,500 on ebay though). I paid under $300 for it! I also had a 1914-D $2 1/2 grade at MS62. Had a few more common dates grade 61 and 62, then a bunch of AU58. I am pleased overall! I would not be though if it wasn't for the 1914!
The collector in me wants to keep it.. when will I ever have a chance to own a coin like this again? The seller in me wants the money.. haha. What to do??
