Got this as a wrongly listed auction. Person said it was .900 silver, and thusly no one bid. I snagged it for $2.25 free shipping. Can I get some opinions on grade, and value.
The 1898 is a better date; 2012 Krause is $4.50 in fine, $10.00 in very fine, $45.00 in extremely fine. Interesting for Switzerland, 20 rappen (of any date) are no longer legal tender as of 2004.
4th addition Krause: KM#29 Switzerland, 1898-B, 20 Rappen, metal-nickel, mintage-500,000 grade/value F-$3.00 VF-$6.00 XF-$25.00 UNC-$100.00 BU-$135.00 not sure what your coins grades is ? if I had to guess XF as told many times over... real market values may vary from Krause listed values.
Hmmm. The silver 20 centimes/rappen coins (made until 1859) ceased to be legal tender in January 1887. The nickel pieces (made between 1881 and 1938), including the one depicted in the first post, were indeed legal tender until January 2004, and could be redeemed until December 2006. The later issues (Cu-Ni, 1939-today), however, are legal tender and circulate just fine. Christian
Yep. The OP's coin is Krause #29; I didn't see Krause #29a, the later variety that's still legal tender.
Don't think they run into many pieces that are older than 75 years. As the redemption period is over for the pure nickel pieces, most people will have returned their old coins ... or do not care. Christian
