Help me with these Bust Half Dollars Please

Where are the hairlines in the 28?

I don't see them could be a case of bs grading by pcgs to ensure more submissions. They've been doing that lately. I'd look at it close with a loupe and If it was clean buy it crack it out and try again or try NGC they've been more consistent lately

 

Very nice bust halves you have! The obverse of the 1826 bust half dollar questions me as well.

 

When I first went through your list, it looked like there might be a few very light lines on the breast on the obverse devices that were parallel and diagonal.

 

So I've already bought the 1819 and the 1826 with the 1812 on layaway. I'm just curious if I should get another one of the bust halves.

I did also have two other coins that I wanted to buy but decided on the busts.

I don't own any graded barbers so I was very interested in these.



This one peaked my interest but the SEGs holder threw me off. Didn't know if it'd still grade at ngc or pcgs.



If you were going to buy a coin including the 1828 and 1829 halves, which one would you get and why?

 

I like the 1829 half. Of the coins on this page, the 1907 half (proof?) has a lot of hairlines and should be graded/priced accordingly. The 1897 half looks like a decent AU coin, possibly a slider. The half dime looks very nice and every bit a 63 UNLESS there is high point rub which really can only be assessed in hand. (all of the above are just opinions and subject to the vagaries of not being able to see the coins in person)

 

Out of those three coins is a tough decision. The 1907 quarter look proof like but the hairlines are bothering me. The 1897 halve looks like an average AU coin but I see one major scratch and some more hairlines which also isn't good for the eye appeal factor. The capped bust half dime looks like it was rubbed however it still has the eye appeal factor along with the nice toning. That being said if you were to send the capped bust half dime to PCGS I would expect it to get a MS63 grade maybe even a MS64 grade. It's a very nice coin and if I were you I would choose the bust half done.

 

The 1907 is a proof graded by SEGs as a PR62, the half is an AU55.

I really liked the dime too, but am worried about paying ms money if it has been cleaned or messed with.

 

1828 Bust Half PCGS AU Details - PASS - Problem coin.
1829 Bust Half ANACS AU50 - Decent coin; it looks accurately graded. If I had to pick one to purchase from this group, assuming the price is right, it would be this coin.
1907 Barber Quarter - PASS - Heavy Hairliness/Problem Coin. Older proofs were often cleaned as a matter of practice, so some hairlines are overlooked, but this coin takes it too far IMO. This coin is just plain awful. I would avoid PF coins of this era below PF65.
1897 Barber Half AU - PASS - Dipped out; I wouldn't even give this piece a second glance.
1837 Bust Half Dime - PASS - There looks like there might be some rub on the coin. Granted, some coins with rub are played off as cabinet friction even by NGC and PCGS and reside in mint state holders. Regardless, you can do better for $750, and could pick up a nice coin in MS63 in PCGS/NGC plastic. In other words, it is not worth the risk.

On another note, if you are already purchasing coins on layaway then it looks like you might already be overextended. I would only stretch for truly special coins. The 1829 Bust Half is nice, but you can easily find another. I would hold out for when you have more money. I wouldn't buy any of them if I was in your shoes at this time.

 

The 1828 has a code 92 on the holder, which is the code for "cleaned".

 

I believe the 1812 is a O-107 R1
