This is my first silver trime. I can't get over how tiny and thin it is. It barely weighs anything at all. What do you think it would grade at? These are the ebay seller's pictures as my camera doesn't have a good macro setting for taking pictures of coins. I think it's a cool little coin and I'm proud to have it in my collection.
I love it, it's cool! Here's a fun fact for you about your trime: Your coin was minted in 1853 and that means that it is made of 75% silver and weighs .8 grams versus the ones made from 1854-1873 which are coined in the standard us silver content of 90% and weigh .75 grams. Few know that the silver 3 cent pieces of 1851-1853 are made of 75% silver and, as such, are the only US coins ever made in this odd silver content.
Was 75% silver 25% copper instead of the 90/10 of regular coinage. Sterling is 92.5 silver and 7.5 copper. Early American silver articles such as flatware etc was coin silver prior to around 1840 English was always sterling as the guilds mandated. Much early American silver was made from captured Spanish coinage and bullion
Have 2 of them myself (both '52s), a very interesting little coin. Must admit that your's looks better than either of mine, nice pick up!!!
