are silver pennies (us) rare?

    i forgot all about one of my silver pennies. it is a little eaten away so i can only read that it came from the 1940's.

    I think your referring to a zinc-coated steel 1943 cent. They are not rare. Quite a few were minted. It has to be in great condition to be worth a couple bucks.

    1943 the mint made steel cents to preserve copper and brass for the war.

    yep, wheats were minted from 1909 to 1958

    i have found a 1943 steel coated penny in my dresser also try puting a magnet to them they will be extreamly attracted to them

    owing to a shortage of copper during the critical war year 1943, the treasury department resorted to the use of zinc-coated steel for cents. no bronze cents were officially issued in 1943. a few specimens struck on bronze planchets by error are known to exist. through a similar error, a few of the 1944 cents were struck on steel planchets. (got this from the redbook, in case your wondering :) ) 1943-25cents 1943D-25 cents, 1943S 35 cents. also look for a bold D in the 1943D. these were doubled and are worth about $6 each.

    Also they were refered to as lead pennies, cuz I think people didn't like them for some reason. Just a bit of trivia for you. Still an interesting coin.
