The old-time comedians used to start out their session with, "A funny thing happened on the way..." Well a funny thing happened at the three mints (Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco) in 1936. A half dollar was authorized by congress to be struck to honor Providence, Rhode Island’s 300th anniversary. The designs were created by Arthur J Carey and John H. Benson. The obverse displays Roger Williams in a canoe being greeted by an Indian in the center of the coin, the motto (IN GOD WE TRUST), the dates (1636 and 1936) and RHODE ISLAND.. The reverse has the Anchor of Hope mounted on a shield superimposed on a mantle, the legend (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA) and, at the bottom, the denomination (HALF DOLLAR). What’s wrong with this scenario? Providence is not mentioned anywhere on the coin! Clinker
