Why is it that I rarely see 1965 pennies in circulation? The numbers were somewhat lower than the years before and after but not by much.

Well, 49 years have passed since 1965 could be a good reason you do not see very many in circulation. I found quite a few roll searching cents. They are out there.

I graduated from high school in 1965. Our 50th Reunion is next year. I'll be sure to ask everyone if they are hoarding them.

'65 was the year I saw my 1st 2 mint-sewn bags of cents. Initially, the '65 double-dots were thought to be a hot variety. That was 2 dots on the top right of the memorial. I think my dad pulled 5 from the 1st bag.
They bought a cookware set for mom, some tools for dad & some sort of exercise machine. The 2nd is still sealed, I'd love to bustem, but cents aren't my thing. My kids aren't numis-wired, but my g-kids are. I'm awaiting my 1st g-g grandson, maybe he'll get the honors. I'll never forget the sea of red on the basement table & how incredibly exciting it was to treasure hunt w/dad. I remember covering the b-ment windows,
keeping what looked like all the $$ in the world, safe from prying eyes.
So, I never really looked for them, I know where 5000 are.

They are not as common as 1964 dated cents, but still not rare.

These wholesale at only 90c a roll now but at one time in the early '80's they had a nice premium (~$2.25). They aren't common by the roll but supplies are ample for the aenemic demand so the price has come down a lot.

Nice specimens that are obviously not SMS are probably undervalued.

Dave, I saw mention of it on the web somewhere, I'll take a look. I was only 8 @The time, new to coins, and can only guess it may have been a gouge, chip, etc.
Losing popularity so quickly I'd imagine it wouldn t be in CPG.
