I'm curious as to how someone can identify a 1922 Peace Dollar with a matte proof or Satin finish. A peace dollar I have looks to be extremely well struck in comparing it with another 1922 peace dollar. How do tell the difference?
Look at your last photo, notice how there is beveling on the top and bottom of the reeding. Proofs have edges that are strict right angles without any chamfering (beveling). The 2 terms are used similarly, but there is a slight difference. This is the primary identification of proof from a business strike which both of your appear to be. A answer to your question is that appearance can ID a un-impaired proof that is satin or matte, but wear will eventually remove that if the die has no other identification differences. http://www.basiccarpentrytechniques.com/Handwork in Wood/images/271-400.png
You can tell the difference because the design details of the Proofs are slightly different. I could make it simple an just tell you how,but you will learn and understand a great deal more if you will read and follow through on what you find here - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/peace-dollars-possibly-unique-examples.249973/
