A coin I have had for about a month now. Got a for a great price. I enjoy these hefty things. Herennius Etruscus (251 A.D.) Seleucis and Pieria, Antioch Billon Tetradrachm O: EPENNE TPOY ME KY DEKIOC KECAP, Bare headed draped bust right, five dots beneath. R: DEMAPX EXOYCIAC, Eagle standing left, head left, tail to right, wreath in beak, with wings spread, standing on palm, SC in exe. Antioch Mint, 251 A.D. 26mm 13g McAlee 1153e; Prieur 636
I agree, very nice coin. I've been seeing a lot of those Antioch billon Tetradrachms lately. I've been tempted to get one myself, Trajan Decius though because it fills a slot and is more affordable than Herennius Etruscus I think. I wonder if these coins were the inspiration for the US. .25 cent quarter.
Super new addition, Mat (congrats) ... #98 on the ERIC-II Rarity list I also have an example to toss into your thread ... Herennius Etruscus, AR Antoninianus 250-251 AD Rome Mint Diameter: 23mm Weight: 3.80 grams Obverse: Q HER ETR MES DECIVS NOB C, draped bust right Reverse: PIETAS AVGVSTORVM, sprinkler, simpulum, jug, and lituus (sacrificial implements of the priest)
Thanks everyone. And as far as inspiration of the quarter, doubt it. Eagles were used pretty much by everyone over the centuries. @stevex6 Already have an ant. of him.
I do like those big chunks of billon that are the syro-phenician tetradrachm. Herennius Etruscus is still on my wish list although I already have an ant too Q
Nice coin Mat! Really like this type! Congrats! I do not yet have this emperor but he is on my want list.
