that's awesome ... good one Yah, I have a great visual of you showin' up in your new track-suit ... Oh, and all of the Walmart chicks are diggin' it!!
very nice...especially the mini-horse and trident. gratian is aslo on my list, but here's my favorite valens. i posted recently, but i'll post again...
Awesome, chrsmat!! ... nice coin => hey dawg, apparently you have a nicer Valens than I do!!? (brutal ... man, I need to buy "less" coins!!)
When I first looked-up this Valens coin, I mis-attributed it as a very rare coin from 314 A.D. (some other fellow was also named Valens in 314 A.D. I think). The experience taught me much about looking-up Roman coins. Definitely worth the $0.60 tuition paid for the coin. This Valens coin is one from A.D. 364-378
Ummm, are Gilad, JA, crsmat and C89 the only dudes with a Gratian and/or a Valens example? ... c'mon, man-up ... => who has the sweetest Valens and/or Gratian?
In all honesty, I don't care much for any of my coins of either of these rulers. I am not terribly hot on anything I have from RIC 9 for some reason but these two guys are weaker than most. Steve mentioned next chasing an Arcadius so I'll add a couple of his with the challenge that Steve should get a better one.
I only have one of Arcadius, and it was an opportunistic grab because you seldom see this type with a well-detailed bust. At 13mm, it's probably as small as Roman coins got. The bust is about 6 x 3 mm (!)... Arcadius, 395-408 AE4, 13mm, 1.1g, 6h; Heraclea mint: 378-383 Obv.: DN ARCADIVS P F AVG; Small laureate, draped, cuirassed bust r. Rev.: VOT V within wreath // SMHA Reference: RIC IX, 18b (p. 196)
JA's coin is really nice for these both in style and strike. The obverse of chrsmat71's coin is also nicely centered with a more typical portrait style. In addition to being a different mint, JA's is younger when Arcadius' legends were continuous rather than broken in the middle. Arcadius was young when his first coins were made and the various mints all have different styles. Without legends, I can not tell him from Honorius. The other Arcadius style of note is the 3/4 facing military bust. Mine is from Antioch.
Nice coin, Doug! I keep my eyes open for any of the facing bust types at a good price, just because they're so distinctive. That's a type you might be interested in Steve, and on your budget you'd probably get a much better coin than mine. So far I've only got Honorius... Honorius, 395-423 AE3, 18mm, 1.9g; Nicomedia mint Obv.: D N HONORI-VS P F AVG, helmeted and cuirassed facing bust holding spear over shoulder and shield decorated with cross. Rev.: CONCORDI-A AVGG, Constantinopolis enthroned facing, head left, holding scepter and Victory // SMNK Reference: RIC X, 92 (p. 248)
This comment echos my feelings exactly. I'm in Florida until Monday and I have none of my coin photos on this thing. Oh well, at least it has a keyboard too.
