Getting good answers. Most Charlotte coins have very bad finish. As to the note, NGC said "cannot be graded as it appears coin was apparently used in inapporiate jewelry mount", I don't know if they determine anything about coin before the decision was made about mount. I do believe it is real, though, as it was purchased in the 1940's and has been sitting around for years. I ran across it while checking a friends coin he had stored in a box. Checked a picture of it against counterfeit Charlotte coins and it seemed to pass all the tests to be real. The Charlotte poor coin quality was mentioned, guess it's why the mint got shut down so fast (unless the South needed precious metal). Either way, makes me believe its real and worth , at least VG if not for rim marks. Most of your answers fall in line with my thoughts. Not worth trouble to sell on Ebay. Maybe sell to jewelry store (if they understand or care about the Charlotte minting. Thanks for your time. Steve
If you think it isn't worth it to plop on ebay, I'd think you are mistaken. The way fakes are being gobbled up as authentic, shows there are ALOT who do NO homework, and just have extra $$$$ to throw away (literally to throw away....it makes me sick seeing these fakes getting sold, despite being reported from numerous ebayers to both ebay AND the seller, only to see that the crooked seller gets positive feedback). I'd wager there are a good number of collectors who would be more than interested in an authentic Charlotte gold piece, and I'd put it on ebay in a second, though I WOULD disclose the jewelry issue (though, if it were mine, a Charlotte gold example would get tucked away). I find it odd that you wouldn't want to keep the piece, now. Did you submit it to get it holdered and keep it, or was it your intent to sell it all along?? Regardless, I'd put that on ebay...I'll bet you'll be glad you did.
As I said, I looked into this when seeing coin in friends shoe box. I will pass this info on to him, I also think he should put it on Ebay as he cares nothing about collecting. Problem is, he's never sold anything and will ask my help, I'd rather have the coin. I'll just see what happens, he'll probably think I'm out to take advantage if I ask to buy. Maybe I'll just drop issue and tell him to save it for his grandchildren (he has none yet). As to thread, I do think it should be changed. Read introductions and couldn't find a link to a help page so I'm lost. I'll just wait a day or 2 and remove thread. But, if someone can provide the FAQ's, etc, I'd appreciate. And, I agree with Hockey Puck, I'd love a Charlotte gold in my collection, I don't care how rough the finish or the 4 semi flat crimp marks. Isn't that what collecting is all about. Someday there may no other Charlotte Gold minted coins in any condition.
