Hey All. So I found this in a coin roll.....If there is a coin that has MD that looks similar to a known doubled reverse, rest assured I would be the one to find it. I first noticed a doubled reverse that I thought was MD and then I flipped it over for the date; a 1965 no MM. I then checked Wexler's and Variety Vista and saw that this resembles their listed coin: Wexler's WDDR002 and Vista's DDR002. If it is not MD, I think it is another variety. The coin is very worn and the only significant die marker listed for DDR002 is a small die scratch above the 5 in the date; again my coin is very worn. Well. I can ask it this way: Am I the luckiest guy in the World to find a MD coin that closely matches a DDR? If I am, I can think of a lot of bad words I can't say!!!!! I then will shrug it off, cry, laugh and move on to the next
I am no expert but I don't believe this is Double Die Reverse I could be wrong and you should wait for expert opinion But to me it does not match Magers find of the 1965 DDR-002. The doubling looks flat and does not have the notches. A lot of the doubling is similar location Doubled Die adds to device MD takes away from the device... doubled die round with notches adds to devices MD flat and no notches takes away from devices
I too am not an expert however I do play one at a lot of coin shows at the CONECA tables. OP, notice in the picture that Ocala has provided the notch's on the F on the top cross bar and the lower cross bar in the picture on the right. That is noticeable doubling.
http://doubleddie.com/980499.html If you look closely at your coin and Mager's coin on Wexlers site I always ask myself these questions (note even doing this I make mistakes myself) Is it MD or DDR Is the doubling round and not flat Is it adding to the device or cutting away from the devices What can help ID it Do the locations match Do the markers if any match Overlaying images / side by side comparison
um like I said, I must be a very lucky guy!!!!! For I would be the only guy in the world )) to find an MD coin in the same locations as a DOUBLED die with the same date TO FUNNY (POSITIVE NOTE) I've got to be LUCKY!!!!!! Now all serious: For the guys that know me here, this is exactly what would happen to me!!!!!! What are the odds? As stated by you guys, I thought the very same thing (just cant believe it) Hey I got the poor man's dbld 55, I mean 65 TY guys!!!!!!
let an expert look at it, maybe at a local coin show, wear does play an issue on this coin, so flat, or shevle like doesn't cut it on this coin, anyways
Rick, wear or not, a doubled die will always display the correct characteristics and "flat/shelflike" will ALWAYS be machine doubling regardless of wear.
Hey guys I thank you all! I just haven't seen to many guys slamming one for his opinion before on any of my coins or others. Normally it has been just left alone to the opinion or somebody just says: In my honest opinion its just MD. I do wonder sometimes about this only being photos, but I trust all of you. I even thought it wouldn't hurt to get a double look. I mean why not I haven't ever done that, ever. It could be a great learning experience for me
Only speaking for myself here After looking at 10,000 pennies I think I should have found something besides MD, die deterioration, plating issues, pmd, etc. When I find one that is not OBVIOUSLY one of those, that wishful thinking comes into play. It's great that there are so many knowledgeable collectors here that will bother to look and freely give their opinion. I am only beginning to understand how to diagnose coin errors.
