Would you rather have a Gold CAC sticker or one grade higher on a coin? I know it highly depends on the coin. Here's my situation...

Just bought a super nice 1945 Micro S Mercury dime graded by PCGS as MS66 in the old rattler slab. I feel it could upgrade to an MS67. The difference in value between the one grade is about $300-$500. I could either send it off to see if it gets a gold bean, or see if I can get a 67. Thoughts...?

I would recommend you to see if it gets a MS67 grade.

Are you planning on selling the coin? If not, I wouldn't spend the money either way. If you are...look at sold auctions and see which sells for a higher amount and go that route. But, remember to factor in the costs of the grading/CAC into those calculations. Also, remember in both cases it is a risk...it might not gold bean or upgrade.

I'd go for the bean , it's cheaper and if you get a gold people pay stupid money for them . But like Camaro said , if you're not selling why waste the $$$$$ . JMHO

If you're not going to sell it, I don't think I would do either. I would just admire it's beauty.

If you made me choose, I'd send it to CAC. A gold bean does often bring strong prices as if it was graded one point higher.

i would say that it would be better to try to get the higher grade! But thats just my opinion :p

Every once in a while, I get bored with some of my coins and sell them. I don't know the fate of this one since it's new, but selling is never off the table. The downside to regrading is losing the old rattler slab.

Old rattler' + gold bean could mean a nice price above market.

Idk, I like the rattlers but never really got why people like them so much, they dont fit in the right slot and they are kinda a pain!!

If that is the case...I would do nothing now. People also pay stupid premiums for the old fatty's...so I would probably keep it there. If you do decide to sell it, CAC is the cheaper route and I would send it to them at that time.

But, then again...look at the associated values with all the possible outcomes. See what would yield the best result and if you decide to sell...go that route.

It's still hard to tell the market value for gold beans since there aren't a lot out there.

Simple. Send it to CAC in an attempt to get the gold bean and then send it to PCGS in the holder using their Reconsideration service with the requirement that the coin must upgrade a full-point for it to be removed from the rattler. You have the best of both worlds.

It is a little more difficult but they are out there. I would look for prices on gold beans in general (other types of coins too) and then compare them to non-gold beaned coins of the same type. You can probably get at least an idea from that.

That said, unless you are planning on selling...I wouldn't do anything. Why invest more money into it. If you are determined to DO something...I would send it to CAC but I also like the older holders. I don't buy into the commonly held higher grade (as they have been pretty picked though these days)...but I do like the nostalgic feel to them.

I thought you can't request a higher grade when submitting a cross or regrade to pcgs or ngc?

You are correct, PCGS will not allow one to stipulate a higher minimum grade than the current grade for a crossover or regrade. However, I am not writing about the crossover or regrade services, but am instead writing about the Reconsideration service tier. The Reconsideration service tier looks at coins already in PCGS holders. It also has two options that one may choose from; having the coin cracked out and regraded if it would upgrade by at least a + and having the coin cracked out and regraded if it would upgrade by at least a full-point. Even though it is on the PCGS submission forms, most folks do not know about the service, but it is heavily used by dealers at major shows.

But does reconsideration service allow for coins graded by NGC...like this coin? I thought it was only for PCGS graded coins.

The OP states that the coin is graded by PCGS in a rattler slab; am I missing something?

You know...I was getting my threads crossed. There was a similar thread about an NGC fatty slab and I was thinking this was it. My bad.

Here is the coin discussed. Got it in hand today and was a little disappointed. Was hoping it could upgrade, but it looks like a regular MS66 to me. There is a little mark on her jaw, and a hit across the torch on the back. I will post later my two different Micro S MS66'S and see which you all like better and which I should sell.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
