I have this coin and I cannot find any information on the internet about it. Any ideas where this coin is from, what year, it's denomination and what it might be worth?
Manchukuo, 1937, 1 chiao, Krause #Y-519. Books $2 in VG, $5 in fine. Manchukuo was a province of far northeast China captured by Japan in the 1930s, then set up as an independent state with its own coins and stamps. This was Japan's first aggressive foothold on the Asian mainland, other than the fact it had occupied what is now Korea and Formosa/Taiwan for many years previously. Coins of Manchukuo are not especially common; a similar copper-nickel coin from China or Japan is worth about ten cents when well-circulated.
It's not from Manchukuo. It's from East Hopei dated 1937, denomination 2 jiao. http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces18830.html In this condition, maybe it's worth 10 - 20 dollars.
Thank you so much!!! I looked everywhere I could not find anything and here you guys have the full history of this coin. That is great. I'm so happy right now. Thanks for the quick response, good job guys!
I could NOT find this in my Krause catalog. I know the KM# is Y-520 from this PCGS slabbed 1 Ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/China-East-...1080099?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item20e6cbf6a3
It's still rather common in VF condition. It gets harder in XF and rather scarce in UNC condition. Hence the high price for what you see on ebay. I've managed to upgrade almost all of them, with the exception of this denomination. I am under the impression that 5 li in decent condition is actually a lot harder. Will post photos when I get time to photograph them all. Not surprisingly, there are counterfeits known for them. I have a counterfeit 5 fen which I bought intentionally to compare.
