I found this old coin while metal detecting in western North Carolina. I've found a lot matching the front of the coin but not the back. We're most of the coins I've found online have Hispan eT Rex mine is lacking the Rex and reads Hispan ET ind.r.m.f.m. It was minted in 1790. Any info?

I am guessing Spain but I need to see the other side of the coin to be sure. could be Mexico from that mint mark.

And the diameter in millimeters; four denominations (in 4 sizes) look like this.

A diameter of 17.5 mm would appear to be a 1/2 real coin (additional denominations in this design are 1, 2, 4, and 8 reales). The mintmark is Mexico City. I don't have the 18th Century Krause to see if this is a good date.

Well, it's not rare; at this time, the Spanish silver mines in Mexico and Bolivia were cranking out untold tons of silver, using Indian slave labor. Most was minted into 1/2 real through 8 reales coins, then shipped back to Spain (along with gold coins, too).

The Atocha (discovered and salvaged by Mel Fisher) was such a ship, but from more than 150 years earlier, and its valuables came from South America, not Mexico.

With the big hole, I'd say $7 or $8. Still a highly unusual find, especially for western North Carolina, where you normally dig up English coins, if anything at all. When I lived in Asheville as a kid (1958), there were no commercial metal detectors yet.

I'm just curious. How did you measure a coin to a thousandth of a millimeter?

I think he measured in inches and then did a conversion on the computer.

@Justincastle , I found the approximate value by looking at eBay's completed auction listings. It's one of the best ways of determining real-world value of coins, along with looking at bricks and mortar auction records.

that hole in will detract from the value a whole lot. still an awesome find.
my Krause does not show the mintage number on this coin.
