hi all! i was going thru my silver washingtons last night and found this one. it is a worn 1940D. in the redbook it shows only 2,797,600 coins were made with this year and mintmark. i was wondering how much this coin would be worth. i bought it from a dealer for $2.25 or about a year ago. i was also wondering the grade. i have like 3 1940D's because when i started, i thougt they were rarer than the othere silver quarters. every time i saw one, i would buy it for melt. in the redbook it shows this quarter to be $24 in EF-40 condition. all the other quarters from this time period are worth $3-$6. is this quarter rare? is it worth more than thr $2.50 melt value? 2 million is not very many coins. the 1950D was minted with 2,630,000. is this the 1950D of quarters? i have been wondering what the value and grade of this coin has been every since i bought it. like i said i have 3 or 1940D's because i bought them all for melt value. if anyone can tell me the grade and value, that would be great. i also have a 1936D quarter about in the same condition as this one is. are they worth more than melt value? i really want to know!

What you have there is worth about what you paid, but hold on to it, that 1940d is a great undervalued coin (I thought it when I bought mine and I still think it).
40D is tougher in higher grades. I would hang onto any I came across as the value of lower grades may increase as more State quarter collectors decide to go back and collect the set. Couldn't hurt.
