    Gil-galad I AM SPARTACUS

I mentioned in my Maximus Caesar post that I would be posting my updated ERIC II Rarity list for my 80th celebration. I don't have as many pending this time because there were a few coins that I ordered and paid for that it looks like I won't be receiving them - long story.

It's a little slow today I think and let's have some fun if we can. If you have a ERIC II list already, post it here in this thread. If you don't have one, post a Imperial ruler that I don't have to give me some ideas for future coins too. For example, I don't have #13 Vespasian, or #40 Trajan Decius. Imperials and Provincials are welcome.

Post em if you got em!!

Very nice ladies. Both of those will be extremely difficult for me to fill later on. I'll add them to my wish list. lol

It's fine, we all have different collecting goals. Getting over 100 Roman rulers is mine, currently. I have other goals as well. But that is the main one.

Alright. I'll bite. I'll start off with the highest (most common) coin on your list that you don't have. You've inspired me to start my own ERIC rarity list.

OBV; IMP CAESAR VESP AVG COS V CENS, laureate head right/

Very nice Vespasian As. I've been planning on getting one soon as I've seen one fairly affordable and decent grade. Not as nice as yours though.

Very nice Magnia Urbica. Another difficult to fill coin. I recently seen a very low grade one for over $100.

Vabalathus is #109? I wonder how I ended up with 8 of them? Oh yeah, I am a hoarder. :) But yeah, anything past 140 or so starts become really obscure, really fast.

    Gil-galad I AM SPARTACUS

The dual headed Aurelian/Vabalathus is not counted for #109. If you have 8 of the other ones, you have some fairly valuable coins.

Oh, ok. Those are the ones I own. Figures. :(

I wonder why? Vabalathus is on the obverse, with Aurelian on the reverse, so I wonder why its not counted as a Vabalathus?

  12. Gil-galad

    Gil-galad I AM SPARTACUS

.Aurelian is the obverse, actually. Aurelian has the radiate crown and with the legend of IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG.

Vabalathus is on the reverse, laureate bust. VABALATHVS VCR IM DR

But the mint/control mark is on Aurelian's side. I have a few at work with me, (have to have ancient coins nearby to hold, right), so I just checked. I would think the side with mint or control marks at the bottom would be the reverse, plus I thought I had read they proved Vabalathus was struck on the bottom die, (obverse die).

That's one reason why I think Vabalathus is on the obverse. Wildwinds also has these on the Vabalathus page and apparently treats the Vabalathus side as the obverse (describes the Vabalathus side first, then the Claudius II side). Plus the city these were struck in, Antioch, was under the control of Vabalathus's Palmyrene Empire. For these reasons I would count this type for him

That being said, I still don't have a coin of him :(

    Gil-galad I AM SPARTACUS

Then I guess those coins will have to be counted as Vabalathus. I assumed they were Aurelian and I believe RIC has them as such.
