Today I recieved my first Celtic coin. I'm going to try my best to identify this but these Celtic coins are tough. If you guys know any other info please feel free to comment. East Celtic Kugelwange Type AR Drachm Skordosci Tribe in Syrmia 2nd/ early 1st Century BC (2.11grams. 15mm) Obverse: Laureate head of Zeus right Reverse: Horse advancing left Philip II of Macedon Imitation
About all I could guess is "Philip of Macedon Imitation" but you already have that basic description covered. It will be interesting to learn what others can tell you about the coin. I'm assuming it is real & you got it from a good seller.
A nice one. Mine is supposed to imitate an Alexander III Drachm Celts, Danube Region, Imitative of Alexander or Philip III, c. 150 B.C. - c. 50 A.D., Silver scyphate drachm, Dessewffy, No. 534, Group XXVIII (or similar) Fair, 3.314g, 19.1mm, obverse head of Herakles right, wearing lion's head headdress; reverse Zeus enthroned left, holding a scepter in left and eagle in outstretched right; struck with extremely worn dies.
Wow!! ... that's a very sweet Celtic coin, my young coin-friend (super cool, congrats) ... Yah, I bid on a coin in today's auction, but dropped-off the hunt at the $450 plateau (which I thought was stupid-high and I thought that I was going to win for sure) ... but apparently the coin ended-up going to $650, proving that there are at least a couple more dudes in this world that have no problem making bids that are far higher than the average historical prices ... However, sadly, I still think that this coin is very, very cool (by the way, A-Noob has a sweet example of this coin-type) http://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=266800 Oh but again, silverdrachm => congrats, for that is a fantastic Celtic pick-up!! (well done) ... maybe one day I'll eventually score myself a cool Celtic example?! Cheers
Thanks! I really like thee Eastern Celtic Coins. I might have to pick up a few more soon. Its ridiculous how addicting ancients are.
I think it was a great addition. Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, the Scordisci drank blood. Can't check out the source they the author cited so that's as far as I could go with that.
