Numismatic Books?

Help--I'm getting bored with coin collecting. This has happened to me before. I love coins, but sometimes they just fade out of my life, and my collection languishes in a bureau drawer for months or even a year. In fact last fall I almost decided to sell my collection (holding back a few loved pieces, of course) and just forget about coins. What stopped me was my discovery of this forum. Being able to discuss coins with other enthusiasts--many of whom are experts as well as enthusiasts--renewed my attraction to the hobby.

But now my interesting is starting to flag again. I have the feeling that I need a few good books to read to re-spark my interest. Can any of you recommend anything? I would be interested in any reading material on U.S. coins from the Morgan dollar up to now, especially coins containing 90 percent silver. I don't mean material for beginners, I mean well-written books with fascinating content.

If you've read any good books on these subjects, please tell me about them. Thanks.

Since I don't collect US coinage myself, I didn't pay a whole lot of attention, but at the Long Beach Show yesterday one of the supply dealers had three tables of books, and I noticed Roosevelt Dimes, Jefferson Nickles, and Washington Quarters on some of the covers, in addition to all the Morgan stuff.

Check out Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, etc. websites and search for "coins". Good luck. :smile

The Official RED BOOK of
MORGAN SILVER DOLLARS
A complete History and Price Guide
Written by Q. David Bowers (2004)

It is a great history book as well as a price/collecting guide. The list price is like $17.00 so its relatively inexpensive. It's about 300 hundred pages of easy reading.
An added benefit is David Bowers is Co-Chairman at Stacks Rare Coins and has always answered any questions I have emailed him regarding his book, so its like having a distingushed professor you can call on if you don't understand what he has written.

 

Although it's not about silver coins I found Million dollar nickels to be a great read.

 

most of david bowers books are excellent reads and there are many out there of various topics. alibris books has an excellent selection of used books at fair prices.

Good suggestions

Thanks to everybody who responded to my request for book suggestions. I don't know why I didn't go to Amazon first, as suggested by Satootoko and Aidan Work. I've been there now and have found some very interesting titles. A few weeks ago I saw the book mentioned by Silvereagle 82 on Morgans in a coin shop. It looked wonderful, but I was in too big a hurry that day to look at it. I will go back and probably buy it. srkjkd recommended David Bowers books and Alibris Books.

Believe me, I will check them all out and have no doubt that I will experience some satisfying reading. Incidentally, I was a reader long before I became a coin collector.
