Yah, this was the second of my three coin splurge (I will post the third coin some other time ... it'll be the last coin for quite some time!!) ... anyway ... Ummm, here is a sweet lil' unit with a trio of snakes on 'er ... I think/hope that a few of you sweeties have a few examples ? (please post 'em, if you've got 'em) Mysia – PERGAMON, Cistophoric Tetradrachm 123 - 104 BC Diameter: 27 mm Weight: 12.4 grams Obverse: Cista mystica within ivy wreath Reverse: two serpents entwined around bowcase; BO above Reference: Other: Very attractive toning
Man, I love the cool bowcase, with the snakes squirmin' around it (very cool coin ... I've wanted one of these for quite some time!!)
Fer sure => yup, there is nuthin' quite like a roilin' pile o' snakes!! ... c'mon, brother => jump-in!!
Very nice lil brother. I've been wanting one of these, but haven't found it in my price range. Good on ya.
What a coincidence. I was just doing a search for Stevex6 snake-themed threads because I bought one at WFOM and was going to drop it into one of your threads. I was surprised to see this unfamiliar thread posted "a moment ago" I failed to find an Alexandrian uraeus or Agathodaemon as nice as any of yours though. This was the best I could do for that particular Steve-stalking task. And oooh, nice one, Mat! EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian year 11, 126/7 AD diobol Obv: AVTKAITPAIAΔPIACEB; Laureate head right Rev: Uraeus standing erect left; LENΔEKATOV Ref: Emmett 1145(11) R1, Milne 1220a Purchased from a dealer at WFOM, Chicago 2014 (one of the few for which I forgot to record the seller's name ) Translation of legend abbreviations: AVT(OKPATΩP) KAI(CAP) TPAI(NOC) AΔPIA(NOC) CEB(ACTOC) Imperator Caesar Trajanus Hadrianus Augustus LENΔEKATOV year 11
Yummy => great coins, bros and sis ... Yah, I am starting to get a few snakes under my belt, eh? (thanks for postin' => please keep 'em comin') ... that's a super snake, C-Princess (it deserves its own thread ... I like you)
Here's my one cistophoric tet-- from the Stack's mixed lot. It's not my favorite coin. Maybe I'll try cleaning the crust although the iridescence would probably go away.
Hey, it says "TIF" on these coins (written downwards, on the left-side) ... man, I thought that these babies would be your go-to!!? Cheers (I'm gonna log-off for few secs)
You might try soaking it in distilled water and prying some of the crud off with a toothpick. It's worked on some of my coins without altering the color. As far as snakes go, here's a Geta provincial... Pautalia, Geta, 189-211 AE18, 3.6g, 12h; Thrace, Pautalia Obv.: L CЄΠΤ ΓΕΤΑC Κ; bareheaded, draped, cuirassed bust right. Another excellent coin Steve. You sure have been busy! Renovations going under budget? I hope to have a Marc Antony at this level of quality one day. I enjoy it every time you post it!
nice coin surge stevex! one of those was on my short list for my summer coin surge...but the stars didn't align this time around. oh well, may in my fall coin surge and can nail one.
Thanks for the coin compliments ... chrsmat, it was the same thing with me and this coin-type ... I always had an example in my sights, but never seemed to get around to actually pulling the trigger, but when I saw this lil' baby I knew that it was time to pounce! (sure, it may not have the crispest obverse, but I love the reverse and I love the fact that the bowcase is distinguishable from the inter-twined snakes ... sometimes these reverses can look quite crowded)
