Bought this directly from the mint. Looks like theres a thread in there??? Thoughts? I'm thinking they devalued my coin and should send me a new one!!! 20140815_162720.jpg

I can't tell from your picture, but it may have been struck with a cracked die or be a retained struck through. Sometimes this type of error can command a premium. If you are really bothered by it, you should return it for replacement. You'll have to return the entire set though. Are they still available for replacement?

Not that I know of but that was more of a joke. It's hard to tell exactly what it is since it's sealed. Looks to me like a piece of thread or something... idk.... interesting though. Have had it a couple of years and never really looked at it till today. I kninda think it's cool. Just not sure what that is or why it ended up in there lol.

Plus considering 2012 sets had a low mintage, I'm gonna consider this a rare find. Haha. I think it's kinda cool.

Based on shadows and how the light plays off of it, I believe that there indeed is something on it as opposed to this being an issue with the coin itself.

I did shake it a bit to see if whatever it is moved but it stayed in the same place. I'm gonna guess because of the tight packaging. I'm not gonna break it open to find out. I'm happy with thinking the mint messed up and put a piece of thread on my coin lol

And 1000 years from now we'll be able to clone the US Mint employee from the DNA left in their untouched perfectly sealed hair. Interesting find actually, it's fun when "they" make a mistake.

You said that you shook it to see if it would move. Did you try smacking the edge of the case on a hard surface to see if that would cause it to move?

:banghead: Don't tell him to do that! he might break the case or damage the coins.

You don't understand josh. You don't hit it hard enough to damage anything.

Context, Josh.. context. Being as the objective is to ever-so-slightly move the possible hair/thread, the gentleman is certainly not suggesting the OP forcefully smash the holder onto a cement floor.

Trust me I wont hit it to where it will damage anything. Not that worried about it.

Just for fun lets say it was a retained strike through what do you think someone would pay for the set? I can't say I've really seen any retained struck coins for sale.

I figured that he might have meant to slam it on a hard surface saying that as a joke.

You can see the reflection of whatever it is so it is obviously on the coin... Now I guess the unanswered questions are, 1) is it stuck in the coin or just laying on top? 2) what is it? Looking at it now, it kinda looks like a piece of wire of some sort.... ?? Either way I've not seen a mess up like this one. ;) I'm happy being it's owner.hehe

  18. Looks to me like a piece of thread or wire. I'm asking myself what I would do if this happened to me? I'd probably open the casing and remove the object, but if there is damage/imperfection, I'd likely return it for a new set. If I can't do that, I'd sell it as a premium "error" set or keep it as a nice collection piece and anecdote.

Just list it on like ebay as an error and see what someone would pay for it or start it off at a certain premium?

2012 sets were sold out a long time ago because of their short mintage. My understanding is you can't get them from the mint anymore.

  21. Well, I'm assuming now you want to sell it. I'd just put it on ebay, mention the error, and see what happens. I certainly would keep expectations low and assume your going to get a spot price or perhaps less than that. It really looks likes a simple piece of thread or wire, but not sure. Who knows? I mean a coin is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
