Okay, so if 1974 was so "full of mistakes", there certainly would be no reason for someone to fake one, right? Your reasoning can work both ways, sir.
If you want the truth, post it here. You got the truth in this thread. Your coin shows damage, nothing more.
If you learn the minting process of coins, it should be evident that this coin did not leave the mint looking like this. People mess with coins for lots of reasons. I am in no way implying that YOU did so. But someone between the year 1974 and 1988 decided to take this one and squeeze another coin together with it. Why they did this is unknown. Maybe they were just trying to make it look cool, or maybe they were trying to pass it off as a genuine error to make a quick buck. But one way or another it got back into circulation and made its way into your hands. Sorry to break the bad news. It certainly looks cool but unfortunately it is not a mint-made error. We often call them "vice jobs" or "squeeze jobs" and they appear quite often on the forum because they stand out compared to a normal coin. Do research and read up on websites and you will have the knowledge to pick out errors in no time.
And I have a strong coin background.... I have been studying errors for more than 20 years. Your coin is not an error...
You may be rite dont know! i took a look and googled fake vice pennys,,,,,,,il post some indian head pennys tomarrow!
I am right... And you are right... You don't know. So please listen to us, for the most part the people here know their stuff... If not right away.. Some experienced member will come along at some point and help. We WANT to help, I promise.
Because when they smashed it in a vice they weren't able to get even pressure to transfer the design completely.
If they were able to create enough even pressure... Yes. In this case however they just didn't smash them hard enough to transfer completely.
i still thnk its odd some one between 1974 and the late 80s tryed to fake a 1974 penny! for what reason hmmmmmmmm
Monetary gain... Or sheer boredom... But for whatever reason it was done... It is what happened to this coin.
