If I had to use either, I would pick the cointains. I have never had a reason to remove coins from them except to send to slabbing. I believe that they protect the coin better from environmental gases, because with air-tights people find it easy to unscrew them for various reasons and even to reuse them on other coins, not knowing if microscopic 'seeds' of corrosion goes along with them.
Everyone knows air-tites are not airtight , right?

I use Air-tites for the good stuff, cardboard 2x2s for everything else.

I always order from air-tites. com. Fast service and I can order as many or as few as I need.

    And Kointains are airtight?

No, and I didn't mean to imply such as I would have said it. Since air- tites use the words , many actually think they are air tight. Kointains don't say such, so most think they only contain coins at the best. Either one protects well if used properly as will cheaper ( than air-tite ) 2 piece hard plastic snap together. But if all three were in an environmental damaging air, I would suspect the Kointains would protect slightly better ; in water, the hard plastic ( including air-tite) if sealed tightly. If fire damaged, I could removed the melted kointains easier than the hard plastics without damaging the metal. All 3 are very good if closed properly, but air-tite is a sexier coin name than 2 piece snap plastic, or kointain.

Yeah, it seems that Kointains have a small but devoted fan-base. I don't care about the name, I just want what works best, and is works for what I collect.

I remember reading a Whitman publication that touted Kointains, too.

I've never seen or held a Kointain, so I don't have anything to compare to air-tites. Also, I can buy air-tites from many sources, particularly my LCS.

But the reason I got into air-tites is because they offer non-standard ring sizes that I use for placing different-sized coins TOGETHER into double-sided, blank Dansco pages, that only have ONE diameter hole size, for my very own home-made World Coin albums or type-set albums.

I heard the maker of Kointains was out of business, or was it InterceptShield(?), but I recently saw them for sale at an online retailer after searching for them.

I bought a reproduction Flying Eagle cent in 2000 and put it a Air-Tite. It's been sitting in a open Rubber Maid dish, where I keep small objects I'm likely to lose, nail clippers, lighter flints etc. If it has turned in any way since 2000, I can't see it. But I still prefer hard flips and note cards.

Does anyone have a good answer as a hard plastic holder for medals that vary in diameter from say 36mm to 90mm, and also some are quite thick? Would love to get these into nice holders for display, but I haven't found an answer, regardless of cost.

Dave, jewelry supply places ( especially Chinese) do offer round , screw top (usually) , holders for gems, to bracelet size. I think with a little google search of images, you might find something. Also Bead shops, craft shops often have 'pot jars' plastic containers with screw top lids to store loose beads in. Walmart, Michaels, JoAnne, Amazon, etc. ( these look to be bout 40mm).

I use the small ones from Walmart for storage of small screws, bolts, nuts, springs , etc.

    definer definitely....! LOL

I use both air-tites and kointains. I use air-tites for the coins I have in better conditions and kointains for the others. Kointains can be a pain to work with since the differences in diameter between the males and the females is not that much. One of the dealers I dealt with actually sent me mis-marked bags and I have nearly 100 that I can't use because I don't know which "sex" they are. I still like them for what I use them for, just won't use that dealer again for them.
