Thought I would start a thread for those who find special or silver coins in everyday change. Considering a roll hunter can go through thousands of coins and find nothing it can be a thrill to find something among just a few coins.

Feel free to post past or present stories.

Today I went to the local Pizza Hut to pick up a quick meal for the family. One of the dimes just had "the look". 1964 Dime. It's weird but its like treasure.....a big $1.41 of silver treasure. I am sure my head would blow up if I ever found a gold piece at a garage sale or in a relative's attic.

My mom was having a gargle sale and I was helping her out and she got a few rolls of quarters to make change and when she sent me in to go get change from a roll, I saw the unforgettable edge of a silver quarter! Even though it was like $4 in silver it sure as hell made my day!

Besides roll searching, after 6 or so years of catching the silver bug, Ive only found 3 silver coins in circulation.

I got a silver dime from the bank last week. With my car washes and random scores I have found $3.60 in FV this year way down from last year.

got a 1964 half in change at BSA camp a couple weeks ago. (Yes, they give halves as change at the tradin post, as well as $1 coins. unfortunately, they wont sell me full rolls of them)

I have found quite a few silver quarters and a couple .50 cent Half dollars, but I did have an unexpected find. I was vacuuming out our floor heater and something got stuck on the end of the hose, I pulled out a Pesos which led to several more. The very last one I pulled out was dark in color, I thought it was another Pesos, but it was actually a 1941 Quarter!!!! The one time I really enjoyed detailing the heater :)

I have to ask, what is a floor heater and why do you have to vacuum it?

Floor heater, instead of central air and heating we have what a lot of people call a floor heater. I am on a raised foundation and in the middle of the home is a metal box and inside that is a gas heater and the vents are on the floor with one on each side of one wall. It also has two vents on the side of each wall about two feet high. As to why we clean it: normally due to two dogs, we vacuum it out prior to winter use but mostly on the top parts, but one day my daughter had dropped two plastic toys to the very bottom of the metal box. It was time for the winter cleaning so I got the extension out to the vacuum and got coins before I even got the toys :)

My strangest find was when I was walking across a Walmart parking lot in Raleigh NC a couple of years ago and found a 1926 P Mercury dime on the ground. Treasure is where you find it.

I've found 2 silver quarters since I started looking (about 2 years ago) - one was given in change (1963-D), and a bank teller offered up a 1964 as a consolation prize when she didn't have any halves or $2 bills.

Weirdest would be what my girlfriend found wading in a nearby river - she found a large coin (about the size of a half dollar) that turned out to be a 1917 UK large penny. How it wound up in a US river, we'll never know.

Same gf also found a 1918 Mercury dime when using the coinstar machine. I think she's a keeper (referring to the girl, not the dime).

"Found in the wild" - I like that. I've been lucky in change twice I can remember: a 1945-S "war nickel" in change in 2013 and a dateless buffalo nickel a few years prior.

Yeah, there's still stuff out there. I can't match the people who find 1/10oz AGEs in dime drawers, but I've spotted an 1890s Liberty nickel in the "take-a-penny-leave-a-penny" tray at the work cafeteria, and I've gotten an XF-details 1903 IHC in change from the same place, both in the last few years.
