About 10 years ago, a co-worker's father passed away and left a coin collection behind. My friend didn't want the coins and knew that I had a passing interest in old coins, so we struck a deal: I'd pay him 110% of the face value of all U.S. pennies; I'd pay him the book value of the lowest grade I could determine for the silver coins (not being an expert at grading coins) and I paid him the then-current market price per ounce for all other sliver coins (mostly commemorative Morgan Mint, etc.) We were both happy with the deal. Well, ten years later I'm thinking to sell of some of the coins. What would be the best approach? Should I take photos and put them up for auction on eBay? Take them to a local coin dealer and pay for individual appraisals (at least two thousand coins, including pennies)? Sell some in lots? Just hold on to them (we don't need the money)? Suggestions, anyone?
post some of the coins here! and if someone likes them, try to sell them here. or you could do ebay or coin dealers. do you have any flea markets around you? there are lots of coin dealers in flea markets that will pay fair prices.
You could offer them for sale at your local coin club,as I am sure that there would be some members looking for coins to fill those spaces in their collections. Aidan.
You may do that only after you have qualified under the forum rules for use of the Open and Auction forums. Buy/sell/trade offers (including "I might be interested in buying") are strictly forbidden in any other forum at CoinTalk.
that's a really strict rule. so you can't say even your interested? i'm not trying to sound smart but why so strict? what's the deal?
It's very simple. We don't struggle with analyzing how seriously someone is offering to make a deal - we just prohibit the kind of posts that have turned other forums into mini-EBays. If you want to discuss the possibility of making a deal, contact the other member by Private Messaging or EMail. If the member has not activated those methods of contact, you can post a simple request for that member to turn on his/her PMs, without mentioning anything about buying/selling/trading coins.
I dunno, if your read the rules, they really arent bad at all and make sense.... I'd guess that the Admins/Owners are just trying to keep spammers and dealers from littering the forum with their products.... Also I'd say they are trying to promote posting and interaction... 10 Posts is really not that much... Heck, I have seen several people do that in a few hours...
FWIW, I wasn't trying to make a "sell" offer, just curious about options. I think that's a sound and reasonable rule, btw
