I just wanted to share this great deal I think I got. Someone was selling a Whitman folder with a complete set of brass British 3 pence coins from 1937 to 1965 on eBay. The set included the two rare dates, 1946 and 1949. I already have a set, but since I think I paid $24 for my 1949 and this whole set was $10, I couldn't let it go. Attached are photos of the first two pages. There are only 3 coins on the third page. And I do know that the series goes through 1967 with a proof in 1970, but this folder was obviously from when they were still being made.
Friggin' cool. That was a deal, alright. Did the person who originally put this together shoot for an average grade, you think? Or perhaps just put in the highest grades they could find for each hole? What is the average grade in this set? I can't tell from the pics, and anyway I don't know anything about grading these coins.
I don't know about grading these either. Probably just grabbed the highest grade they could find. It might have been someone in Great Britain assembling them from their change. The book probably dates from the early 60s. They don't really have a lot of wear. They have some toning, which I don't necessarily care for in this type of coin, but that's from their age I would say. And the key dates are some of the better looking ones, which is nice.
