Good, reputable place to buy a couple of ancients?

Continuing awesome info, guys. Those two were among the first couple that caught my eye and were put into a "wishlist". They were also among the least expensive. On the first one (Caracalla), I like the design but recognized that that is had some issues with cleaning and surface. I also like the design of the 2nd one but also saw that it was pretty "soft" looking and grainy. Now that I know what it is called, though...

Last night I was "shopping" a couple of sites with my daughter (7) and we really liked the design on several of the older Republic coins (like the Quadriga reverse) and some of the Greek with animals. (like this one https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/in...piter_jupiter_in_quadriga/456482/Default.aspx) .

I apologize if I made it seem like I was asking people to shop for me... That was not my intent. I really wanted some pointers in the right direction to avoid getting "screw-gded" or making blunders on eBay. Once I am ready to Buy Now, I may ask about more specific coins. Until then, I hope I've sparked some good discussion that has maybe helped other "ancient newbies"!

Roman republics are nice. They can be expensive though. Ones that feature Roma on the obverse and the Quadriga reverse are abundant and can be bought at respectable prices.

You don't need to apologize for talking about ancient coins on an ancient coin forum. We do it all the time. :)

Bill and I go back along way. All the way back to Folsom. He makes great sandwiches.

Of course. And it was for sale on a public site. But I still finding the timing interesting.

The price was right for that particular coin, but I am afraid you may be right. The timing is suspicious. As I said before, none of the regular posters here on CT would buy a coin posted for our opinion. Of course one of us may also be eyeing the same coin, but that would be communicated. I have a feeling Mat may be right. A lurker may have seen what you were looking at and decided to have a go at it. I'm sorry this has happened.

A tip: when posting coins for consideration, I suggest saving the photos of the coin onto your computer and then attaching it to a post, or upload them to a photo sharing site and embedding the link into a post. That way, you don't have to post a direct link to the sale page.

  12. If I were to randomly come across it, I probably would have made the purchase. I don't think any of the regulars on here would pick it up given the circumstances.

Says "Reserved" so does that mean you can contact the seller and tell them if the other buyer backs out, you'd be interested?

Bummer you lost your coin. I would never buy something from under someone who asked my opinion about a coin. Bad Form CoinTalk lurker (if it was you that did it).

What is a fair price for a darius or daric type coin? I know that involves a large range. Like the king with bow in hand.
