Well, its finally done. Got myself an Otho denarius in a grade I was comfortable with. I parted with a graded trade dollar and got this minutes later with much more money to spare so ive been off the wagon as of late. I have no problems sharing the cost, $236 total! Had a trusted dealer I buy my expensive coins from look at it and he OKed it and said it was a steal. I budgeted about $350. I can live with his name not being on the flan too. It was tricky to get pics of due to shine/wear. So it was shot under a 10x loupe instead of the normal 5x I use with my iphone. I didnt set out to get a 12 caesars started but when I added one after the other over time, cheaply mind you, it just had to be finished. Will have all the coins put in a virtual tray photo soon. Smooth score, Mat ... as you know, Otho is the most rare (rarest?) of the 12 Caesars, so that is a very cool pick-up!! I still need the toughest four: Julius Caesar (??? not on ERIC-II rarity list) Galba (76th on the ERIC-II rarity list) Otho (113th on the ERIC-II rarity list) Vitellius (73rd on the ERIC-II rarity list) ... again, super score, Chick-coin boy!! (congrats)
1) Julius Caesar (???th ... not on the ERIC-II rarity list) 2) Augustus (11th on ERIC-II rarity list) 3) Tiberius (42nd on ERIC-II rarity list) 4) Caligula (68th on ERIC-II rarity list) 5) Claudius (20th on ERIC-II rarity list) 6) Nero (25th on ERIC-II rarity list) 7) Galba (76th on ERIC-II rarity list) 8) Otho (113th on ERIC-II rarity list) 9) Vitellius (73rd on ERIC-II rarity list) 10) Vespasian (13th on ERIC-II rarity list) 11) Titus (50th on ERIC-II rarity list) 12) Domitian (19th on ERIC-II rarity list) => yup, "Otho" is the winna-winna-chicken-dinna!!
I love these coins and the way they show his wig. I got mine from Forum Coins three of years ago and paid much, much more, so I think you got a great deal. Congratulations. Congratulations Mat! I know you have been chasing this one awhile and a fine example it is! Congratulations on completing the set. I am still a decent ways away myself even though I am not actively pursuing it.
Curious? ... hey, I am not a "purest" by any means ... In other words, I give myself coin-credit for a ruler no matter if my example is AR, AE, denarius, sestertius, asparagus, etc ... ummmm, if and when I collect the remaining 4 Caesars, are you dudes gonna call "foul" on my collection? (do they have to be denarii?)
I see nothing wrong with a mixed set (which is what I'm doing as well). I have some emperors represented with multiple coins but I'm generally looking for my favorite coin of an emperor, regardless of the metal, for the set.
