A rumor was floating around yesterday that someone got held up in the mens room at gunpoint for their Kennedy coins ... I asked both a security guard and a uniformed police officer (there are a ton at this show and have had way more of a presence than usual) and they both said there had been no report made to them and that it was likely a rumor.

I also heard yesterday that there were riots in the lines at Philly and so they decided to shut it down, and theoretically there were people trying to hop flights from Philly here to Chicago to come get in line here before they decided to shut down all 3 venues.

... then this morning a friend excitedly tells me all about how someone got held up at gunpoint, only this time it was in the ladies room!

I have no idea what, if any, part of any of those rumors may actually be true, but I do believe if there had been a robbery at gunpoint it would have made a bigger splash.

I think I confused the date with the post above hers. It was a doted line instead of a solid line separating the posts.

They have also quit selling the clad sets at the show too. But I saw Silvertowne had a whole box of SP69 Clads with the special label

Not to the end of the century, only for as long as fools pay crazy prices for paper labels - that won't last forever.

Don't bank on anymore US Mint releases at coin shows. Quite seriously. I heard from a big whig in the ANA that Baltimore is requesting to be excused from the Silver Kennedy release because of all the trouble.

With regards to the armed robbery, I couldn't trust any info 100%, but there is reason for the convention center to stay quite. They host a good amount of high-end events and don't want that kind of publicity.

Is that sarcasm? There are certified pieces on eBay for in PF70 DCAM/UCAM in the $3,500-$4,000 range, with a few a bit above.

I don't understand people who would riot or hop a flight across country to buy a coin you can go onto a website and buy in two minutes. I think this is why I'm so turned off modern stuff.

    Sheer and utter nonsense.

Oh, and I heard from a reputable source that the so called robbery that took place was just rumor. Never happened.

image.jpg Reputable source...I had a nice chat with a Mr. Krauss. He told me how they corral all the important mint issues. They have hundreds of people in their network that they pay to use their credit cards...I wish I had recorded or written down how much they paid...and they order the max amount of coins. When they receive them they send them right to Krauss or his business. The people are paid so much more for each coin they send so they receive a nice payday and they are paid within a month. I took a picture of all the gold Kennedys he had in a display at the ANA show. He also told me that the way to do it is to have several credit cards with different addresses for them, such as PO Boxes, and that is another way to get around the so many per household limit of the mint. Now unless you would order and sell enough of any one issue it could get expensive having several PO Boxes but if you are small time and just want to order a limited number of new issues, that is one way to do it.

You don't understand money then. I drove 6+ hours and got a hotel for the night for this. I profited over $1,600. Would I pay $3,000 for this coin? No. But am I willing to "work" two days to make $1,600? Heck yes. I then bought one at the normal price online, to keep. So basically, the trip paid for a coin, plus some. That's why people do it.

It's not so much understanding money, if it was earned legally. To me it's more important to know what the amount earned was used for. To feed the family? To bankroll future purchases? To satisfy an addiction? Take a vacation? Slush fund? To develop power over others? All these actions will tell me much more about the type of person I'm looking at. Words said will be weighted then, appropriately. No offense to anyone. It's how I measure people.

So you're doing it pay for a trip? I'd lose over 3K per day just taking the time off work. I guess money is why I wouldn't consider such a thing.

The issue isn't whether someone is a dealer or not. It's whether they are circumventing a system designed to make the distribution as fair as possible. It's just as wrong when individuals do it. That includes individuals who use multiple credit cards and friends/relatives' addresses to circumvent household limits in buying directly from the mint.

Well I'm guessing most people don't make $800,000 a year like you apparently do. $1,600 for 2 days work is a lot for most people.

So how should the Mint react to what has transpired? How can they possibly 'police' folks with multiple credit cards and addy's? How can they prevent the dealers form paying folks to go online and buy products for them on the first day of issue? Short answer.......they can't, so we can wail and whine all we want, nothing will change in regard to the ordering from the mint. The efforts for a level playing field will never be achieved. How could they be, short of not selling to the public at all? It's an impossible task. One thing that might help the humble collector, though, would be getting faster broadband internet access. :)
