This coin is 6.70 grams of gold, 23.3-23.7mm round, 1.29mm thick.

I'm guessing it's Louis XIV and French? ... based on the year. But I have no clue what the value is or if I'm identifying this correctly.

    Help please!!!

    Thank you.

You're correct, Louie XIV. And It was minted at the Paris mint. It is known as the Louis d'or a la tete virile design and it was the first time they minted one not of a juvenile design for him. The coin has a mintage of 463,831.

I would estimate the grade at XF, but the coin has adjustment marks so its value would be slightly less than one without. My guess would be somewhere around $2000, plus or minus.

I got some coins from my grandfather who was a coin collector. This one looked like one of the more expensive ones.

Thank you GDJ --- I appreciate the info.

France 1860. not sure which Krause catalog KM# it is ??? KM#218.1 or KM#218.2 both just say "rare" next to the date with no prices for the grades. both are .917 gold the KM#218.2 says there is a mint mark numeral 9
so I am guessing yours is KM#218.1 you have a very rare coin. worthy of getting it slabbed PCGS or NGC. awesome coin.

That's not the same coin at all, but one of a later design. Look at the differences in the hair and face. The KM# for your coin is 236.1, Krause has no picture of your coin. But other specialized books I own do. The keys to identifying your coin are the bust design - the youthful face, the hair, and the mustache (on your coin it is faint but it is there) - the A mint mark, and the privy mark above the hair - this is found on no other coins of the period. The description I gave is accurate, as is the approximate value.

There is another coin known as the Louis d'or juvenile a la tete nue design that is similar to that of your coin and sometimes confused with it, even by catalogers who supposedly know these coins. But the la tete nue has no mustache and a different privy mark is used. Other than that they are the same.
