Personally I don't think this hype and hoopla is about Kennedy or how popular he ever was. I think it is over the fact that the hof coins went way up after issue and johnie-come-late is trying to get in on the action this time. I really don't think anything like what we are seeing would be happening if the hof coins never came out and nothing special was produced by the mint last year.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Coin for the thread. I had to catch the light just right to make the color show.

If that's what someone wants to spend their money on I am all for it. What I don't understand is the ones in the OGP going for more than 1240 on eBay. Why would someone spend more than they have to?

I'm a little skeptical about the beanie-baby comparison. Anybody got a thirty-year price history of beanie bullion? :)

I guess any coin specifically minted for collectors and not for circulation could be compared to beanie babies.

old proof coins were modern coins at one point.

I guess that would include proof trade dollars.

    Nice coin by the way!

I think they have more in common with the first days of the Lincoln cent than beanie babies. People waited in line for them. People paid people to wait in line for them. People bought them and walk down the line until they found someone who would pay their price.

    But the best one is:

"An often repeated story attributed to George Fuld recounts how coin dealer John Zug aquired 25,000 uncirculated 1909-S V.D.B cents directly from the San Franscisco Mint at the time of their issue...." David W. Lange.

It would be something to find an original bank bag for cents from San Francisco dated 1909.

Would it get a special label if they could attribute it to Zug? :D

HoF gold doesn't have anything to do with the gold Kennedys.
    Apples and oranges.

HoF gold is slowly on the rise, supply and demand.

The hof gold prices are dropping like a rock. They were sky high, then sort of hovered around $1300. Now you can bin one 70 for under $ 800

:D....$800+............almost double your $$$$$$$$....and they are on the rise.

    Should of bought more, eh?

Dude they are not on the rise they are falling. Yes it is higher then issue price but from thousands to then hover in the 1300 zone now to $800 is going down not up.

The gold Kennedy isn't the Beanie Baby and it's still available for issue price from the mint, so it should be priced at $1240. The "Beanie Babies" are all the worthless paper labels, made by private companies, at their whim, with no legal limits on their production - that's what people are paying crazy prices for.

The guy who invented and trademarked Beanie Babies, and caught the wave, is probably a multi-millionaire. We should all be so smart or so lucky. I once saw a woman on eBay selling "Beanie Hit & Runs," Beanies with a tire track across their gut, don't know how she did; probably a great way to dump damaged goods.

Or maybe there was a guy in China with an old tire mounted on a pump handle,
    pumpin' 'em out, who knows?
