I just got my lot of 22 Parion Drachms on the mail today. I have to take some time to identify which ones are actually Parion Drachms and which are imitatives. The reverse on most of these are pretty strong and the obverse are not but I'm guessing that's how most of these turn on. They are probably the cutest coins I've ever seen and that's strange to say considering Madusa is on them. They are just so tiny!
Comparatively speaking, there are about six coins that are quite nice, especially the one struck on a triangular flan. The rest are average, but not below average for the series. I think you did quite well with this lot.
Hey bro, buy whatever strikes your fancy! Lord knows I buy lots of stuff that other members of the forum wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. But I looked through about 50 listings of these Parion drachms (or really hemidrachms) a few months ago, and none of them have obverses that are particularly well-struck. Which is too bad really - you would think they could have found a way to strike Medusa in a higher relief than the incuse design. I saw coins listed for $100 that didn't look any better than the best ones from your lot. Now, anyone can list anything they want at any price, so that's not saying much, but if you do decide to flip them, I think you might stand a chance of a little profit.
Yay thats good! Do you guys think when I post these on ebay I should put them up as Thracian Imitatives or Original Parion Drachms?
I don't know how to tell the difference, and someone looking for a type coin may not care. Either way, they are ancient coins. I would list them honestly as "Parion and/or Thracian drachms."
interesting indeed...i also like "pizza slice", also "eyes and nose" in the mid of the third row looks good as well. some interesting variation in the reverse patterns as well.
Im going to do auction starting each off them at $.99 with an $18 reserve. That way if each at least hits the reserve price I will make money. I paid about $14 a piece.
I see. Well, I don't do auctions usually. Let me know if some don't sell. I only want one maybe in the future but not right away since I just purchased a coin.
I put every one of these coins for sale. Including the famous "Pizza Slice". I also put up some coins from Syracuse as well as some other random coins. Here they are: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=10michaelps951&_sop=10
