I'm not sure how this will be the "King" of the Kennedy series. The anniversary gold will probably not be the lowest mintage of the series or the highest value.
It all depends on your perspective. I don’t like to rain on anyone’s parade but I would estimate that over 70% of Kennedy collectors do not even consider the 1998-S Matte Finish as part of their core collection of Kennedy half dollars let alone the new Proof gold anniversary 1964 – 2014 coin. Most collectors of the series still consider the 1970-D as the “Key”. Just for full disclosure, yes I ordered one from the Mint’s web site within the first few minutes of it being offered for sale. Yes, I will include it with our set, but our set also has several hundred different CONECA recognized die varieties and errors besides the basic collection of Proofs and Business Strikes. But in all honesty, there are probably less then a couple of dozen collectors that collect the Kennedy half dollar series like we do with maybe a hand full or less that collections are taken to the next level by collecting by die stages. There are even some serious collectors that partake in either the PCGS or NGC Registry with the Kennedy series that do not think the new Proof gold anniversary 1964 – 2014 coin belongs in the core set(s). Myself, I could care less either one way or the other. We like to build our set overall the way we want it and the online Registry set(s) can do what they want too. Just to clarify this point, do you know that in the PCGS Registry, the 1998-S Matte Finish Kennedy is not treated as a “basic” coin, it only has a slot to enter it when you get into the variety sets. Bottom line, if the individual collector(s) do not think that the new Proof gold anniversary 1964 – 2014 half dollar belongs in their collection(s) then I’m confused how you can say “It will be the must have”. All this hype and over paying for “special labels” is what I don’t understand. What ever happened to the saying “Buy the coin and not the slab”. I do not blame the dealers for hiring people to buy coins for them or working with the system to get more then the single one coin per person limit that the Mint established. The dealers are in business to make money and if their cliental want those special labels, so be it. But when the music stops, some are going to find themselves without a chair to sit down in.
The 1998-S Matte has a mintage of 62k. I'm bettling well over a 100k for the gold Kennedy, maybe 200k if the mint sells them for a long time. Heck, I may even get one from the mint if gold tanks or the mintage is low, it isn't looking so low now.
Yes, I can see your point. Very informative reply, thank you. As for me, I had to get one of the King of the Kennedy's (98s). I do not have all of my Kennedy's slabbed. I collect many different ones including errors etc. What I meant was that if one collected Kennedy's, most likely they would want one of these and it would be the most $$ on average etc... I could be wrong and have been before.....
Just checked my order I placed yesterday morning, 8-6. It originally showed a ship date of 9-5, then moved to 9-10. This morning it has moved up to order on hold and ship date 8-5, a day before I ordered. How is that for service? I can only assume I moved up so fast due to all the people canceling their multiple orders after seeing the high first day sales and the ANA fiasco.
Yup. It seems quite likely that, after "50K+ first day sales", we're already back to not having sold out the initial 40K run. Anybody want to try placing an order now and see what the delivery estimate looks like?
Just put an order in Jeff. The # is 43739782. Don't matter a hoot 'cause I'm going back in to cancel it. The order is slated to ship two days ago.......8/5.
Okay, then, it looks like they're back to non-backordered. Anybody still seeing "backordered" status, or has everybody been upgraded to "in stock and reserved"?
Holy cow...I ordered at 2:30 on Tuesday...got a ship date of 9-3. Yesterday 9-3 was reduced to 8-27. "backordered but expected to ship 8-5".
With all of the ship dates being moved up, it's apparent that many orders are being cancelled. Maybe this indicates a low mintage?
I was one of the first to order. When my order posted, the website and my confirmation page stated that it would ship on 8/5. It still hasn't shipped. It's still processing and still has a cancel box. There is no indication of the charge on my card, either. What gives? Are they taking care of the max orders first then going back to fulfill the orders for one coin? The mint says it adheres to a FIFO policy, but IMO, that's a truckload of cow pies.
Not mine, but this is the best photo of the real thing that I've seen. Not a bad looking coin. My order, #43706XXX placed at 12:22 is still on hold but ISR with the eject button still there. No pending charges yet on cc. Who the heck knows with these yahoooooooooos... Click on image to enlarge.
Just checked again, and now I see this: Order Status: Your order request is in process. No longer "on hold"! Anybody else see a change?
Some of you are dreamers. You know the shipping date means nothing, as the mint claims the system is broken. Remember the HOF dates?
An order I place this morning had an estimated ship date of 8/05/14. It has now been changed: 1 unit backordered. Expected to ship on 09/10/2014.
My order changed from HOLD to PROCESS and the Credit card has been charged! I placed my order on the 5th @ 1207 hrs and received a confirmation via email at 1211 that same day... Subject: Order Summary-Order #43704 Date: 8/5/2014 12:11:50 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time From: USMint-Orders@catalog.usmint.gov Hopefully on Monday I should be getting them and shipping them to PCGS
