Hello!! I am rolling some coins to bring to the bank, and I was wondering if anyone knew which US dimes are worth holding on to! I heard somewhere that dimes without mink marks tend to be worth more if they are in certain years, however I can't remember what the years were!! Could anyone please help me out here Thank you!! Also, does anyone know of any rare nickels!?
As you probably know, any dated (dimes) to 1964 are 90%, and while not worth a great deal, are definitely worth holding onto or at least not rolling up with the rest. As for nickels, the so-called "war nickels", dated from 1942-1945 (please note that only 1942 dated coins with the large mintmark over Monticello are of this type) contain 35% silver and likewise are worth keeping/setting aside. Beyond this there are certain varieties that can, often depending on condition, have some to significant added value, but there is more to identifying such coins that simply looking at the date. Good luck.
Jessica, you are probably thinking of some of the dimes in proof sets which were inadvertently struck without the San Francisco (S) mintmark. Chris
Don't forget the 1982 no mintmark dimes! Other than the occasional silver pre 1965 dime that is about the only valuable one you have a chance of finding in your change. All 1982 dimes were supposed to have a mintmark but at least one die missed the step where the mintmark was added. If you find one your not going to retire on it but it will provide a nice bonus.
