This is the sellers photos,so I can't provide any other angles. Anyways, was looking for a raw 1939 S Jefferson and came across this listing. Was looking at the steps to see if it was a reverse of 38 or 40, and saw the weird wave indent ion in the steps. I haven't seen anything like it before. I emailed the seller for an explanation or better pics, but he didn't respond. Any ideas? Not sure it's PMD since the details mostly remain. Maybe struck through or something?
Take the coin out of the holder before taking pictures. Possible die cracks. Also one but UNUM, or it may be a hair.
Guys, this is what he is asking about. The way the top of the steps are missing below the red arrow - Now I don't know about any of you, but I've never seen anything like THAT before. And have no idea what could have caused it.
Thank you for helping clarify my question. I thought my original post was clear enough. I saw the coin dealer who owned this coin at a coin show the other week. I told him I sent him a question about it but he did not respond. He had no answer for me there either.
If it was a die chip there would be a lump there, not a clearly defined edge of the porch. It almost looks like a piece of the coin fell away after it was struck. But if that was the case the bottom edge of where the steps are missing would not be so smooth and rounded looking. That's what has me baffled.
It looks like something was on the coin and was struck into the coin leaving the indention. It would be near impossible to say whether it was when made or after it left the Mint. If it were me I would pass on this coin and look for a "problem" free one for my collection. From the ends of the steps it looks like a reverse of 1938.
I agree it is a Rev. 38, so I am going to pass anyways since I want a Rev. 40. I just thought I would get some thoughts on this error since I can't seem to figure out what it is and the seller isn't offering any help.
