It looks like an unusual die gouge on the tail feathers to me. Here is a normal tail from a 56 Proof. Larry Nienaber
Hey everyone! Thanks for all the replies - I've been at the LCS (keep an eye out later tonight - I will have some WONDERFUL coins to share later.) That would explain why I haven't replied until now. It's the FS-701, "Reverse Die Gouge." According to the Cherrypicker's Guide: URS-2 (2 known, this is definitely not correct) I-3 (moderate interest - most series collectors interested) L-3 (will often sell in a reasonable time period, often to specialists) A quick check of the PCGS website will show the following populations: PR68CAM: 2 PR68: 3 PR67CAM: 3 PR67: 8 PR66CAM: 1 PR66: 6 PR65: 4 PR64: 1 PCGS Total Pop: 28 NGC does not list this under its Variety Plus, so no population numbers to report, even though they should, as they supposedly will attribute varieties in the CPG. I've been trying to find one of these for a while. I'd even won three of them...gotten the packages from each seller, and different coins were inside. (eBay seller errors/dishonesty has cost me about $25k this year. Seriously.) So I was a bit nervous that this would arrive as advertised...but it did! Here is a closeup of the die gouge:
