Hey Guys! So I have been dabbling in the Paper world for a few weeks now, really trying to get a decent collection of Obsolete North Carolina Notes from the Civil war Era put together. I made a presentation on some Local notes at my coin club meeting last month and it really made me want to get some examples of the main NC notes during the same time period. My problem, and what I need help with, is a list of the major types from the fractional 5c to the $100 notes (higher if they were made, but i dont know). I keep seeing a couple of different types of the lower fractionals and the $1s and $2s, but I have no idea where I am at with completion and what all to be looking and searching for around the internet. I would appreciate any help you guys have to offer. Thanks Trey
Here is an example from ebay. I have this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1863-CONFED...604?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c43363264 and I need one like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1862-CONFED...514?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c43357e5a Problem is I dont have any references on if there was another design and what other denominations had for alternate types.
Welcome to the world of paper Money. As a new collector it is always nice to find a predefined subject or area to collect from. Obsoletes offer some very cool vignette's and a rich history. Here are 2 of my favorite Dealers for Obsolete's.. www.donckelly.com http://vernpotter.com/VernPotter/Obsolete Currency.htm Good luck in your efforts. RickieB
You need to purchase Hugh Shull's book "Southern States Currency" if you are solely looking for notes issued by the state itself. It will answer the questions that you have presented here. Here is the cheapest 'buy it now' that I see on ebay..... http://www.ebay.com/itm/GUIDE-BOOK-...885?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51c0441765 If you are interested in notes issued from NC banks you can get 'Obsolete Banknotes of North Carolina' by J. Roy Pennell for list of issuers, denominations and descriptions although most are not pictured. There is also no rarity scale in this reprint (it would be way outdated anyway). http://www.ebay.com/itm/Obsolete-Ba...227?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item5aec45c5c3 For NC bank notes you can also buy the NC download from Haxby's book http://www.shopnumismaster.com/obsolete-bank-north-Carolina I would highly recommend that you purchase all of these. There is a very good website with pictures of NC notes broke down by issuing bank here http://www.coins-n-medals.com/Exhibits/Obsoletes/obsoletes.htm The dealers listed in the post above mine, while very reputable, you can most definitely find most NC issues for much cheaper than from them. If you are local to NC you would be well served to attend the coin shows and get to know Mr. Vernon Vallance, who has an unrivaled wealth of knowledge in all things NC notes. I myself collect NC and VA obsoletes and if there is anything that I can help you with or help with any questions please feel free to contact me.
Hey, I think I just put two and two together.......did I accidently meet you at the big Raleigh show the other week? Sold you a couple notes, took you by Mr. Vallance's table, showed you where to get Pennell's book, gawked at the New Bern scrip I'd never seen in the Stack's guys case? - Josh
Bingo! When I read your first reply I was gonna ask the same thing. The NC and VA obsoletes and mentioning Vernon made me stop and think if this was the same guy I met at the Raleigh show. Turns out you are. Lol. After you sold me that 75 Cents, which I didn't know existed, and I picked up a different $1 on eBay than I already had, it made me want to get a complete run of NC obsoletes from around the 1860s. Pennell's book literally stops right before the notes I needed and I have no idea what to be on the lookout for as far as major design and minor varieties. For instance that 50 cents you showed me with the variation of the number under the sail versus the one not under the sail. Where did you locate that information? Was it in a book? I will check out those other links you posted Josh, and thanks for grabbing my attention at the show. Glad to have met you and done a little business together.
Check out this site: http://nccolonialpm.oldnote.org/ the site owner often attends the Raleigh Coin Club meetings, and another member frequently gives a talk on NC paper.
Got it Josh! Just the book I was looking for Books-A-Million's last copy here in town. Gimme, gimme, gimme!
Hey Trey, glad you got the book. That's as close to a bible as you're gonna find for state issues. You've no doubt already seen the many number variations on different notes now. I think the rarity info in there is also pretty accurate from what I can ascertain although I also know that Vernon says the 1861 cents issues on blue (tinted)(lined, which you can see if you hold it up to a light) are way more rare than represented in Shull's book. As you already know, I trust his opinion on NC stuff over anyone else, by far. Glad to have saved you a little money and it was good to meet you too, if you ever have any questions on NC or VA stuff that I can help with let me know. Also, if you ever need a place to stay here when in town for shows, you're welcome with us. I'm also gonna send you a PM with a little more info on something.- Josh
